Almost ready to Birth
    #2261718 - 01/22/04 02:31 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

So the PFtek jars are almost totally covered in very fluffy looking mycellium.  But since when they were originally innoculated two of the holes never germinated.  However, still on day 14 I'm only looking at about 1 1/2" left the mycellium needs to cover to completely colonize the jar, there are absolutely no signs of stunted mycellium growth either.  My question is should I dunk the cakes and set them up for birthing once the network is finished (like the day it finishes) or should I give them a day or two more to establish a full mycellium network?  I'm just wondering if maybe the growth from the opposite side of the jar has already worked its way through the substrate closer to the side of the jar that isnt colonized?  Sorry if this doesnt make a whole lot of sense, its hard to explain without having the jar in my hand so I can point and prod and go "see, see, what do i do?"

its been a while since my friend did pf tek but if memory serves his correctly he believes you are suppose to wait a week once fully colonized to allow the middle of the jars to finish. Then go ahead and dunk. Patience is one thing you will learn very quickly in this hobby

I would give them 5 days from what "appears" to be 100% colonization. Just to be certian.

If just fruiting off the cake, I find a dunk prior to first flush to be a waste of time. In fact 6 out of every 10 dunked cakes produced LESS dry weight than undunked cakes.

I would hawever make sure to dunk prior to a second flush.

I have never waited 5 days. When they are 100% I fruit them. Ive never had any contam problems. If your going to dunk them then there is always a posibilty of contam and waiting 5 days will leson that but at least any i have done, it hasnt been needed.

I'm not saying it's the difference between a wild success, and a devistating failure. I am just saying that those extra 5 days help a little, and hurt nothing but your patience.

thanks all, yea I think I'll be heading up north this weekend, I dont have a problem waiting but I thought well if I'm gonna be gone for one night then why not dunk them for the 24 hours or so that I'm gonna be away for.  However its not a big deal waiting 2-3 more days.  Just trying to get them to come out as perfect as I can get them, thats all

Ok, can i get some other opinions on prebirth dunking? I plan on, but has anyone else found that the dry weight is less? And jet, its not that i dont trust or believe you, i just like to pool opinions together

Nah, that's cool. but to clarify, I don't think pre-birth dunking results in less fruit, but I don't think it results in more either.

Reason being is that they should have a pretty high moisture content already prior to first fruit. If your cakes seem a little dry, then you should pre-dunk by all means, but in most cases it just takes up time. These are my personal experiences and will offer various results.

A good thing might be to just browse the grow logs. Watch what processes people used and what results they achived.

I learned more in an afternoon in there than I did in the 2 years I was teaching myself.

I have seen dunked cake flushes and non-dunked cake flushes right next to each other many times, and dunked flushes are large. I say dunk for 24hrs in the fridge if you plan to fruit as a cake.
