Best bottom casing layer, is there one?
    #2261299 - 01/21/04 09:41 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

Does a bottom layer actually do anything to improve yields, and which is the best one, spawning to compost?

~thanks~

Spawning to compost is different than casing.

I dont use a bottom casing layer, its used to add more moisture to the casing. Just use a top layer. straight verm, coir, or a mix of the two (40/60). Others do use a bottom layer, so wait for their opinions also.

it improves yields by adding alot of water when its nedded. I have been doing it for over a year and havent done a casing without it. I use clear rubbermaids so I use fine verm and pack it in cause I dont want the mycilium to penatrate and pin. But if your container isnt clear any verm will work. I have heard of people using coco coir but I have only used verm. If its not broke dont fix it right. And it really helps ALOT youll thank me

I also do a top casing just the bottom verm layer is a water reservoir that the shrooms love when they want to get to be 60 grams.

I've tried verm, perlite, and a verm coir mix as a bottom layer. They all work better then having no layer at all. Sure they add moisture but don't forget that myc likes to piss as it grows. That doesn't stop during the fruiting phase. That bottom casing layer besides giving the myc water also gives the myc piss a place to drain off to.

Better then letting the myc sit directly in it don't you think?

dont forget to tip your casing so the piss will run off and not sit on the mycilium/casinglayer other wise it doesnt drain the piss

Yeah, I'll be modding again.

Perlite is great. What I like to use myself. I gave it a try when I saw that a lot of the kits from europe use it.

One of the kit sites.

Only gonna happen if you use a clear container (and I do). I use clear containers but I wrap them in foil. The reason for this is if the casing stalls for some reason I can pull it out of the foil and look for any contam that may be hiding down below the casing layer.

Great guys thanks, perlite it is.

What do you think of 1 inch perlite , 2 inches substrate, and 1/2 ti 1 inch of Coco Coir/Verm?
