Women's Intuition
    #2261416 - 01/22/04 12:25 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Yup - another myth put to rest, at least as far as I am concerned. Poker is a game of equal parts mathematical ability and "intuition". As men (in general) totally dominate the game, then apparently their intuition is better than a woman's (with props to Renegade).

Swami out

Hmmm.

*Off to look up "women's intuition"*

In general, I find that intuition though not gender-specific is still quite rare and abstruse.

Poker is a game of skill as you said in the chess thread (or did you?).  I am willing to bet that men do not employ intuition in their playing.  If anything, the myth that this thread puts to rest is "Swami fully understands the mechanisms of intuition."

That is a myth? *checks dictionary*

What does understanding the mechanism have to do with knowing the results?

I don't think it's equal parts math and intuition

more like:
50% luck
40% mathematical skill
10% "intuition"

"Launched by the design house of Estee Lauder in 2000, INTUITION by Estee Lauder is classified as a refreshing fragrance. This feminine scent posesses a blend of: citrus and florals with lower notes of sweet woods and vanilla. It is recommended for daytime wear."

No, no, no...that's not what I was looking for...

This is yet another Straw Man. You did the same thing in "Intuition Fails the Reality Test." Sure, when you misrepresent intuition and pigeon hole unSKILLED poker players, it is easy to decry intuition

is that intuition or skill?

I think some definitions are in order.

I think that it's part skill because you have to study your opponents and learn their mannerisms to see what kind of hand they have. and it's possible to develop this skill.

Thanks for the props, Swami.

I see the point you're trying to make here, but the generalization is based on a faulty premise.  Look back 10-20 years and there were hardly any women professionals.  Now there's a small group that's decent, but they suck compared to the number of experienced guys out there.  Demographics have way more to do with the ability gap than lack of intuition on the women's side.

Good luck at the tables.  (I've been sitting here trying to remember what the hell they say at the end of some poker show, but I can't get it...and may your flushes be royal...or some stupid shit like that.  Now it's driving me fucking crazy!  :nut:)

So you are confident that men would not draw on the experience gained from passed poker experiences and their developed senses for playing the game? I'll take that bet!

But now we are arguing the definition of a word. Why limit the concept of "intuition" to the realm of phenomenon or extra sensory perception? I like Kant's definition:

intuition: the passive species of representation*, by means of which our sen?sibility enables to have sensations. By requiring appearances to be given in space and time, intuitions allow us to perceive particular relations between representations, thereby limiting empirical knowledge to the sensible realm.

* (Kant defines representation as the most general word for an object at any stage in its de?termination by the subject, or for the subjective act of forming the object at that level. The main types of representations are intuitions, concepts and ideas. )

Intuition develops and functions within our everyday experience, it's not some magical force only amazing people posess.
Perhaps the term "women's intuition" refers generally to the insight of womeng gained through their collectively unique experience in society.

But what do I know wot with the man tackle in me knickers. A woman won the celebrity poker tournament by the way against the likes of such men of power as David Cross and Tom Green.

One explanation for this is women's seemingly superior skill at reading others' emotions. In an analysis of 125 studies on sensitivity, Judith Hall, Ph.D., a Northeastern University psychology professor, discerned that women generally surpass men at decoding emotional messages.

But here's the point, as it plays into your initial post:

Is poker an "emotional" game? I don't think so, but I don't play.

Well I wouldn't put one sex over the other as far as intuition goes...but I WILL say that intuition is a rather rare trait among the general population. The MBTI system places the percentage of people using Intuition over the other Senses at only 15%.

85% of people prefer to use their 5 "regular" senses to gather information...making true intuitives the minority.

Ok, what?s intuition?

I think of intuition as a feature of the mind and an integral part of human thought, and as such, it can be used to refer to the shortcuts that the human brain takes in order to come to conclusions of some sort, which probably involve subconscious processes.

For example, when you are about to solve a geometrical problem, it is unlikely that you'll go through all the axioms you can possibly apply on the problem, but you rather concentrate on a set of selected few that pop into your mind just by watching the graphical representation of the problem. I would call that intuition.
