Extremist Atheist
    #22613394 - 12/04/15 03:28 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

There may be atheists who are extreme, but there are no fundamentalist extreme atheists. Hard to get really worked up over a non-belief.

It takes religion to turn ordinary people into insane killers.

I saw a statistic once about the # of athiest in prison vs the number of christians in prison for violent crimes.
It was something like 1:99 really tilted like that.
Athiests have to live with their conscience.
Religion teaches people that they can do whatever and ask for forgiveness and all is good.

Why do you think atheism is not a belief? Certainly a point can be made that science is able to refute the claims, for instance, of literal Biblical interpretation but surely the word 'God' transcends that context. In that transcendence, atheists base their ideas about reality on limited information, just like everyone else, and so does not that become an instance of having faith in one's own perspective?

This is a recurring discussion..
what do you think I am missing in my understanding of atheists?

The
The Athiest Alliance hasn't been around as long as Islam has.  Give it some time.

Think about a deity or mythological creature that you do not believe in and you have your answer.

Doesn't matter how long it is or will be around. There will never be a suicide bomber in the name of non-belief.

There may or may not be Atheist suicide bombers in the future.  As soon as you put a label on something and identify as that, it's the same locked in mindset as a religion, but the details are different.

The thing that always gets me when atheists dismiss criticism due to absence of belief is this:  do you really expect me to believe that 99% of atheists have not made up their minds about God?  And if they have, then that's a belief.  I don't buy this absence of belief stuff -- I think most atheists have a perfectly good idea of their opinions about God.  You can't fully disconnect belief, on some level, from that fact.

It actually takes the right religion. As Sam Harris put it, the more extreme and fundamental Jains get, the less we have to worry about them.

Atheism has no doctrine of Martyrdom and Jihad. Why would they blow people up even if they were an extreme fundamentalist? Islam on the other hand...

is not believing in unicorns a belief?
In that case everyone has infinite beliefs, which is silly

In any case, without distinguishing between the belief in a personal god that cares about one, and some vaguer idea of cosmic intelligence (or what-not) the notion that there are only a couple categories (like believers vs non believers) is also silly.

Also since all the religions disagree, clearly the burden of proof is upon the believers, and not those who simply aren't very interested.
Folks who aren't really interested hardly qualify as believers.

seems you have belief / bloodthirsty dark hope ...

as if that would somehow vindicate thousands of years of followers of dogma acting idioically

world seems already suffering enough

but you could write a dark novel or nasty song

maybe you could even sell it

Hey Stoopid

This song is better than this lamo thread.  That's what I truly believe.

I think you can be an extremist atheist by being more anti-religon rather then pro not believing.

Belief is completely unnecessary for life. It's completely the wrong attitude and perspective, and mode of operating even. If you believe something, you have it all wrong.
