straw, waiting to colonize
    #2261139 - 01/21/04 10:54 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

My freind is spawning some straw with BRF it has been somthing like a week now and it is starting to colonize but it looks a little thin. Will the mycelium travel thru the entire staw log how long should it take...i know time will vary with size....how big can a straw log be? Thank youy this is his first time with straw

It will take a lttle while. Did you squish the straw down to compact it this helps out alot.

This is after a week or so when it was compressed at spawning time

ya pressing helps a ton. The potency isnt as good as WBS or poop but its better than BRF and thats all of my own opinion

I read a tec back a while ago by oldtimer, He said to put a pf cake in the blender and grind it up to a fine powder. ( After its colonized of course) and mix the powdered pf cake in with the straw.

Well I can say from proof that this works VERY well. A 9x12 pan 4" deep sprinkle with pf cake and mixed in well with the straw then compressed as much as you can compress it is the fastest way to a colonized straw pan. In one day it is covered with myc. Im sure once you try this you wont go with any other spawn. I have thought about trying to grind up some colonized WBS but since its only spaw and adds very little substance i dont see it working any better. Compresion is the key here and the fact that when you grind the cake to powder and mix it in with the straw you have millions of colonization points rather than a few marble sized spots as you would if you just crumbled.

Try it and in 3 days you will be amazed!
Max

I wonder what would happen if you shredded the straw into little bits like 1/8 of an inch do you think you would have to comprese it as much? I wish I had a way to shred it tiny

I shread mine up as small as i can.. 1 - 2 inches if i can...some always gets bigger but in general i make it small and pack it down with weights. The ones im doing now have $100 in quarters in a tuperware  pan smashing it down. Was the only thing i could think to use as weight. I save quarters  Also i didnt mention above but if you are going to blend up your cake..Dont just put it in the blender and turn it on full speed. I did this the first time and was amazed at how hot it got in the blender. It still worked out and is fruiting at this moment but i now just pulse it till its a powder..works great

ya I do 1 to2 inches also I just dont way them down I just press when I spawn. Next time I will use weights. I have never done straw and poo mixed do you have to weigh down when mixed with the poo?

No i wouldnt think as much since the density is greater with poo mixed in but i have not tryed poo yet. To cold to go out to the paster and geting...would need an ice pick. The weight packs the straw down so the myc doesnt need to cross large gaps. It is realy fast. I made new pans yesturday and today there isnt a 1/4 of straw that doesnt have solid myc on it. I let my last pan go for 4 days and then cased it. 9x12x4deep

go to agway or home depot they have dehydrated manure which is allmost as good and it dont dmell like shit its allready composted. Dont forget a pile of poop dont freeze it gives off heat. I live way up north where it got 45 below and the horse poop was still steaming so freezing isnt an issue its just that nasty smell. store bought isnt as good but better in handling and pasturizing.

I read that you should use OLD poo, years old. Not fresh. If you are going out and finding it in the pasture dont get the steaming pile...get the old smashed flat white pile with grass growing in it. Its already decomposing and no need to compost it any farther.
