There is no mountain
    #2260804 - 01/21/04 08:54 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

While searching for the name of the Libet experiment (for the does consciousness take up space? thread), I paged through "The Meme Machine" by Susan Blackmore. It's been some time since I read it, so I ended up reading the last part of the book, which presents her theories on consciousness, and I caught something which I hadn't caught the first time I read the book.

Since the first time I read it, I've had the opportunity to dabble in some tryptamines, and when I read it again now, it seemed obvious that so has she. Just out of curiosity I searched for her name and psilocybin on Google, and this essay of her was the first hit:

http://www.susanblackmore.co.uk/Articles/ehe92.htm (The Question Is - Who Am I ?)

Nice essay btw, but one thing that really struck me was this:

"In my attempts to find myself I have tried many things. Drugs are an endlessly fascinating route. I have long been impressed by people, like Charlie Tart, who have explored long and hard and given up drugs as a route. I have learned much from anaesthetics like ketamine, from simple ordinary but ever-teaching cannabis and of course from the hallucinogens, DMT, psilocybin and that touch-stone of them all, LSD. But the image of the mountain is a good one. The drugs take you up in a helicopter. You see what's there, you may be inspired to climb yourself, but they cannot keep you there. And it is only by climbing yourself that you discover the mountain does not exist after all."

It's like she puts my own experiences with hallucinogens perfectly into words. They give you an overview that you thought were impossible, and when you come back to think about it, you realise that there is no mounatin.

So there is no mountain? But what did we see? And why was it so important to us that we climb it?

If a mountain is something to conquer in ones life, the attempt is made, when in actuality we may have fooled ourselves. But have we travelled none the less? Have we made a mental excursion to the peak of mystery and self will? mmmmmaybe. What do you think about this?

so then what you thought you saw and experienced is just an illusion and doesn't exist?

This goes with what I was getting at in the The Ivory Tower thread... hehe... I somehow missed this thread before making mine.
