isopropyl vs ethanol

Where I live, all I can find is isopropyl at 50% for about $3 or ethanol at 95% for $12.
I've searched old threads and couldn't find an answer. Which would be the better option?

Take 95% and add roughly 25% water. If you can't do this calculation this hobby isn't for you.

Umm the cheaper option which was recommended, isopropyl, is only sold at 50%. $3 for a 500ml bottle vs 95% Ethanol for 12 bucks.
I thought Micro had some magic way of making 50% to 70%.
Please read the OP before you make snarky comments!

give the guy a break... (wondering if that comment holds true for people who can't read :p)
Anyway on the subject, where did you find those prices? Judging by the volume of the containers id say a pharmacy. Did you try lab/chemical supply shops? I was buying 200ml bottles at a time and i gotta say having to run back after a week sucked. Then I asked a local lab supply warehouse I used to buy petris from and they had it by the drum . Bought myself 5l. Dont remember the price but the grief it saved me is enough. Id say its cheaper like that though.

I wish we had lab shops where I live. I'm sure you would't be able to find one in the whole country. Not easily at least, plus I live out in the country side sort of, which makes harder to go to a lab shop if I could even find one.

I apologize for being rude.
I did read the thread. Alcohol isnt used that much and 50% should work in your case.
You can take 50% ISO and distill it to get your higher percentage with the proper equipment.

It's cool.
It happens.
Thanks for affirming that 50% is ok to use. It is only for sanitizing tools.
Don't know if I want to do any distilling though

Whoa man I feel you. The shit they stock here they do it for schools and stuff. I don't buy petris from them anymore cus the sleeves were all torn. Anything used solely for mycology is not found.

Use the 50% its more antibacterial than the 95%.
Isopropyl at 70% is more effective than 50% but oh well
The ethanol would be more effective if you water it down to 70% also more expensive.
if you live in the middle of nowhere check the expiration date on isopropyl. it will oxidize into acetone after a couple years which isn't as antibacterial. if it's a year past the expiration date I wouldn't use it.

Thanks for the heads up. Haven't checked yet, but I'm sure it's fine. I'm out there, but I'm not totally isolated There are at least 3 or four big chain Drug stores in a 2 mile radius of where I live. They all sell the same strength though.

What's the logic behind this? Isn't the rest of the 50% just water? Or do you mean iso vs ethanol?

A lot of mold spores and fungi and bacteria need moisture to live. They absorb the water without second thought, and die because it's contaminated with alcohol. As opposed to a purer alcohol which they won't absorb as quickly because it's to them it's like bathing in acid. At least that's my understanding.

95% ISO or ethanol isn't as antibacterial as 50-70% ISO or ethanol.

Playing mold for a fool for once. Damn If I had telescopic sight id do that all day. Make those bastards pay for getting inside every goddamn agar plate I make.

I did read a study once that said though alcohol kills 99% of bacteria on your hands, plain tap water actually rinses away bacteria way better and does a much better job of making your hands have less bacteria on them. I didn't do much investigation into that but i've heard

If that is true thats a lotta money made from a farce. Last few years those alcohol gel bottles are so widely used its impossible for us mere wageslaves to comprehend how much money these companies make.

hand sanitization has always been sort of a farce. it works great on gloves. to make sanitizer on your hands effective you have to surgically wash them first to the elbows. not missing a single bit under your nails scrubbing each finger individually etc.. but after you wash your hands like that you put gloves on anyway.
most of the hand sanitizer alcohol won't penetrate your dead skin killing bacteria hiding all over in cracks and crevice. you really have to scrub scrub scrub first and then use the sanitizer on your hands for a good 15 seconds or more without it drying up.

Lol that sucks. I got a sister who fucking loves that stuff. She even gives her kids a small bottle of it each for school. And if she noticed one of them aint using it she goes apeshit on his ass. I mean it can only help to have it but back when I es in school we never had this stuff and we used to do some pretty gross shit. Like 5-7 people smoking from the same cigarette, drinking from each other's bottles etc. Hell there were even some kids who used to fight with their "hot dog" so to speak. I was too shy to do that though hahaha.

Actually country. The country I live in sucks. I went to 4 different drug stores with all the same stuff.
All I can do is read, read, read, and ask questions about what you all do and figure out what the best thing for me to do is with what they have here.

Well in that case... Hopefully they have epsom salts.
That will dry out the alcohol but you don't want to go above 90%
