so i gave my friend 2 jars to keep at his apartment and told him how to store them and everything. I get a phone call about an hour ago with him saying "yea, well there are redants crawling around the mycellium and inside the jars, do i toss them?" His apartment apprently has a few ants in it, and some got into the jars. lol, i really dont know what to tell him, for the experimental value i want to tell him to just let them grow and at the end we'll see what happens... anyone ever encountered this?

lol, well he said mycellium was still growing so i mean like why not? just let that little ant run around for a while. either way, mine are still fine, so its worth it to see what happens... just totally wasn't expecting that as a phone call.

how did the ants get in the jar? i would guess that if they can get in so can contams, unless the ants were properly sterilized before entering the jar.

He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." -Al Einstein

heh the funny thing is he doesnt have ants everywhere. The development he lives in is like mainly all college kids, and the houses arent that old at all. His place isnt ant infested, which seems kind of odd that out of all the rooms in that place they would crawl inside a hole the size of their body and make it through the dry verm layer into the stuff.

Maybe somehow some ant eggs got inside the jar, and the ants hatched within the jar?

well they were properly sterlized before innoculation. Even though I'm not up to date on ants biological processes while growing, I highly doubt it was possible for the ant to become full grown in the jar, however I could be wrong

Makes you wonder what would happen if the ant died and the mycellium was able to break down the chiton exoskeleton and actually put the protiens and nutrients in the ant to good use
