Hey man. There are some very convenient hotplates at Rite Aid, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc. I got mine at Rite Aid for $12 if I remember correctly. It's a single burner model that uses around 1100 watts. It is very handy to have around. I've heard many different opinions about using the microwave. I use it for sterilizing my coco coir(for use as a casing medium) and it seems to work well. I'd like to try using ozone to sterilize something. I think it would pretty much oxidize everything. Would you be sterilizing jars? If so you'd have to find some plastic lids for them. I wouldn't tighten them down though. That could be quite dangerous.

Hot plates are the same as one burner on a stove.

I do not know how hot a hot plate gets , however it is plenty hot enough to melt lead which has a mp of 327C .

1000W is fine, its the power just for speed you need not temp, as long as it gets above 121C (for a pc) which of course it will. if you are just boiling to sterilize you do realise it wont sterilise grains.

leave the casing wet, microwaves heat up moisture so it needs to be moist. it wont harm the casing many people do it

If you are working with live tissue and not spores then you can try one of two things. I would recomend heat over either of them. i high concentration (right out of the bottle) H2O2 bath or a low concentration (less than 5%, the rest water) bleach solution bath should be enough to kill off any compeating organisms. I've never tried either of them as a means of sterilizing grain but i've treated living cultures with both as a means for fighting contams and neither one seemed to harm the tissue. Again, this is only when inoculating with live tussue. either one would reneder spores unviable.
