yeah I stack all the time, it works well. If you stack them too high and your PC starts shaking they will fall. So just keep the stove on the right level to prevent it from shaking hard.

not really -- dont let them fall and crack -- you can use empty jars or what have you to pack them in better if needed.

make sure theyre covered nice with foil, and all the basic mess, to prevent any water entry.

using more jars will probably up your PC times too

peace

But dude noticed the manual says not to fill his PC more than 2/3 full. If he puts 2 half pints on top of each other, it's like two inches from the top. Is this a potential problem?

Has anyone ever had a PC blow up or jars shatter inside?

I got a pressure cooker a few weeks ago and I've since used it a couple of times.. I packed it similarly, with very little space above the jars, and it did just fine..

I suppose it depends on the cooker. Mine's an 8 quart wal*mart Mirro cooker.

If you have a tall pressure cooker can you stack your jars two high when sterilizing them? Will that pose any problems?

Not with jars, if you were dealing with stews or something like that then 2/3 would be your limit... trust me on this safety issue

yes, when I was 15, I was very lucky because I was standing only a foott away, the seal failed and the design allowed the lid to pop off, it went through the ceiling, the contents were all over the kitchen... I suffered a few minor burns on my face and arms...

if the plug blows its also a danger, it will paint anything above it with the contents, that day it happened to be collard greens...

Cool thank you everyone.

Prisoner, that sounds like a lot to deal with. The seal just failed huh? Doesn't sound too fun. How did you fix your ceiling? I don't know what I would do if that happened.

Dude's PC has two emergency releases. Shouldn't this prevent any lid flying from happening?

Thanks for all the assistance.

Magash, your rye looks like it has a much higher water content than dudes. He followed you tek to the t though. Soaked for 24hrs, rinsed well in strainer, simmered for 45, PC'd for 1 hour.

He's seeing germination begin and them completely stop due to dry rye. What is he doing wrong?

Hmmm...How big is the hole in the lids? I let the grain drain for as long as it takes to scoop it in the jars. No 20 minute drain times. Does it look dry or is it actually shrinking due to moisture loss?

It does look dry, and sort of has a dry sound when he shakes the jars.

You lost me with the 20 minute drain times, I never said that. I did what you just said, essentially just drained while I was scooping into the jars.

He wasn't sure if he was simmering for long enough, or hot enough, so he went a little bit extra (5 mins) and noticed that several of the rye berries started to split open. Is this normal?

Naw, what I ment was most teks have ya drain it for 20 min or so I didn't mean to imply you did it. I just don't feel it's needed.

He wasn't sure if he was simmering for long enough, or hot enough, so he went a little bit extra (5 mins) and noticed that several of the rye berries started to split open. Is this normal? > Yeah pretty much. You wanna keep it below 5% exploded if ya can but I've had more pop and it worked fine.

This may sound stupid but from what I'm hearing it sounds like it's normal when your done but drying to fast in the jars?

its quite frightening when it happens and I'm very lucky I wasnt hurt, normaly they are designed to prevent that sort of thing from happening but this was a very old model made by presto that my mom had owned for many years... I've never trusted and PC with a twist on top or rubber seals after that. the only thing I could do and it was an unconcious action was to drop and cover...

the landlord was a really nice guy, he came by and fixed it a few days later, we ended up stripping all the stippling off the ceiling and re doing it though...

That probably is due to very high altitude. 5280+

What can he do to fight this?

After that last post, dude went and checked the jars. All 8 recently innoced with honeywater show no signs of life, while the ziploc (#5 in the triangle) container full of rye is beginning to get white and fuzzy. Same innoculant, done at the same time, the jars are smaller, why would the ziploc start to germinate before jars? It's driving dude crazy.
