DetroitMagic said: As strains aren't genetically profiled based on anything but appearance. Technically it would be a cross because it's an exchange of genetics/combination of genetics.
That is simply because appearance is the easiest to note. But it's still a genetic expression.
While it's true that strain doesn't mean what it does for plants, one thing to note is that its not as diverse as it is with fungi in the wild or with animals. Every lineage that we work with is inbred, it's the product of selfing. This means that depending on how carefully the lineage was developed early on, when the heterozygosity was high, certain charecteristics may be more likely to surface. This means that if I selected for a trait like yield, that lineage would have a high probably of producing high yields. It wouldn't be guranteed of course but, if I was wanting to isolate or clone a high yielding culture, that variety might be a good place to start.
EDIT: Please if I am ever wrong(probably a lot) about anything correct me guys, I'm still new to growing,< 3years, and trying to absorb all I can.
Ok cool, this is helping me understand it a little easier. With the pans im trying to clone for density of pinset /size and the ability to be misted without aborting. I have been breeding back in from a limited MS plate to each clone and then growing out from the prints of those.
I just downloaded "essential fungal genetics" any other books or papers you suggest Pasty? Like stated above, from my brief reading, it is nothing like marijuana genetics.
Also your agar tek Pasty, fucking brilliant. Makes agar for newer growers almost fool proof. I would have never made the jump without it. Now that I know normal pours aren't daunting anymore either, but without your two I would have failed miserably and given up agar first try probs.
I feel like it's going to take awhile to get results I'm proud of. I've gotten about 95%that refuse to about but the size is still hit or miss. I'll have some that will grow real tall and some that will stay short and thick from the same tray looking like two completely different species almost. Isolating pans on agar fairly frustrating sometimes, not like plucking a rhizo tip from a cubensis sector. That's why I'm focusing mainly on fruit clones and limited MS from what they produce

Trying for the tall fruits that won't abort first, luckily for me it's been damn near impossible to abort them. I put that tray in the fridge overnight at 37 degrees and they still put on a little size overnight. If I can get them to produce more I think this would be the perfect pans for someone making the jump.
If I ever have a flush that has been clearly mature/stopped growing for 72hrs but refuses to throw spores I throw the tray in the fridge overnight trying to stimulate a sporulate or death situation, it worked with 4/7 galindoi trays. I thought they were all going to rot before spores came
