Dunk before first flush?
    #2256655 - 01/20/04 03:43 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

Wondering if it would be wiser for someone who is on their first grow to wait for their second flush to dunk so they don't mess anything up.. or if it is safe for the most part to dunk right after birthing..

Your cakes have plenty of water for a first flush. I would fruit them.
Birth them and double end case them and youll be fine.
Dunk second flush for sure. IMHO

It depends how long they took to colonize... If it's been a month or more then duking would be a good idea.

I always dunk before birthing and between flushes. I figure the cakes can use all the water they can get.

good luck!

Dunk for 24 hrs in da fridge. You won't fuck it up, and your shrooms will thank you.

To dunk when using the pf tek method would you just fill the jar with like distilled water and throw that in the fridge?

yes depending on the size of the cake a plastic bottle cap can be used as a spacer to fully submerge the cake.

If you're on your first flush then there probably won't be very much room in your 1/2 pint jar for water. I use Pint jars to dunk my cakes. If you don't have any around, you can use cups or mugs.
When my cakes are a lot smaller than the dunking container, I use something to weight them down, like a shot glass or something similar, as cakes float.
If you are so inclined, you can also add a small amount of h2o2 to your dunk water to combat contamination.

Thanks for the quick replies! My friend is going to go with dunking before casing his cakes. But he's got a few more questions..
1.) Would the bottle cap, or shot glass, or whatever is going to be used to weight down the cake in the jar need to be sterilized first? If so, would a quick rinse with rubbing alchohol do the trick?
2.) How much H2O2 should be mixed in? (he doesnt want to make the mistake of adding too much)
3.) A small section of the bottoms of a few of the jars doesnt seem to want to colonize...would it be ok to proceed on dunking these jars also?

Thanks alot guys!

I can't comment on #1 as I dunk right in the jars they colonize in and put fresh lids on 'em.

#2. I usually take a pyrex measuring cup and put about 1/2 cap of H2O2, then fill it up halfway with distilled water. This is good for about 6 cakes.

#3 Don't dunk that if it isn't fully colonized. Try slamming the jar (lid side down) on the table to free the cake from the bottom. It may be stuck and this is preventing colonization. If it is stuck, it should only take a couple of days to fully colonize that area.

Good luck.

if your crumble casing your cakes dunking is probably not worth it, and cold shocking is not adviseable as you have to wait for it to colonize the casing layer, and cold shock makes it pin. If yu wanna fruit as cakes dunk/shock for 24 hrs to get a better flush. If casing just spray the casing layer with water to hydrate the myc.

h202 is a few cc's per jar.

never remove a cake before fully colonized. If you have too, cut off the uncolonized substrate and prep as usual.

Dunking before the first flush is highly recommended from me. It ensures your cakes have the highest amount of water they can take for the first flush. It is kind of hard to dunk cakes that have not been fruited before in a jar so i generally would boil up a big pot of water and let that cool. Add a small amount of h2o2 to it and use a plate to keep the cakes submerged.

I encourage anyone to try and dunk half your jars before first flush and do not dunk the others.

Birth - > dunk -> fruit for optimum first flush yeild.
