You mean "Oetzi" - the man the found on a glacier?
He had the mushroom "Piptoporus betulinus" with him. They say that it has antibiotics in it.

The mushroom piss on oysters is also an antibiotic. I have been thinking of doing tests on different mushrooms to see which have antibiotic properties. I also got a penacilin culture so I will also test that.

It was my understanding that the "mushroom piss" on oysters was an anti-nematode drug.  Stamets also notes that P. ostreatus et al naturally produce Lovastatin, a drug approved by the FDA to lower blood cholesterol.

Aren't mushies just the best?  They either cure you or kill you.

About 50% of all mushroom species examined had antibiotic properties and about 75% of all polypores. Most of the known antibiotics were derived from fungi. The first antibiotic penicillin was discovered when mold Penicillum contaminated bacterial cultures and killed them.

This species is actually very common. Look for it in the beginning of autumn. 'Round here, it's hard to see the birch trees for them in that season
It's also used in the past to get fires started and such. It appears to be a very versatile mushroom, though it's not edible.

I can see a tree full of them from my window. They are small ones but I know where to find some big ones as well. They weather quite nicely. NFUM...

P.S. not many birch trees left anymore.

Do any of you have a digital cam that you could post a picture with.
This subject fascinates me.

You mean kombucha?   It definitely regulates the bacterial population, much akin to a sourdough culture.  The last I read, it wasn't entirely clear whether it was a fungus or not.

On the subject, yeasts' production of ethanol is an antibacterial agent. . .gives them a sort of preliminary foothold in things like . . . fresh grapes

No digicam, but I took these pictures in august last year:

Sorry about the mediocre quality of the pics. These were taken with my old Mamya slr. Can't wait for the 300D...

Very nice. Are those gilled?
They seem similar to oyster mushrooms.

No, absolutely not. They belong to the genus of piptopori, these have tiny tubes. Once you see them you'll recognize that they're very different from oysters.
But of course you could have found this out yourself quite easily
