    #2256562 - 01/20/04 05:19 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Is Gypsum absolutely neccessary for WBS jars? Im guessing this is used to lower ph, but can it be bypassed in the recipe? Thanks

You don't need it.

Garden supply shops. Gardeners use it to keep their soil from clumping together. Or just crumble up part of a scrap piece of drywall. Or dig out some from your wall behind a picture or something. j/k :-)

I don't use it, but make sure you shake up all those grains a few times real well before you innoculate.

My personal take on Gyp...Gypsum is wall board/sheetrock/drywall...pick up scraps at Home Depot for nothing and it can last you a while...Gypsum can help grains to absorb a great deal of water without becoming 'over wet'...over wet grains lead to bacterial contams....while it isnt needed...it is useful.

Lowes + $5 = 5 lbs. of gypsum. For 5 bucks you can avoid the hastle of collecting scraps, grinding up drywall, and all the hastles. Im still using that first bag.
