Why grow when you can pick?
    #2256255 - 01/20/04 03:56 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I just saw a question along these lines in the picking forum. I wanted to get a fresh opinion from everybody here. I apologize if this seems redundant, but I am sure that different people visit different parts of this board seperately. Plus I figured that the recent advancements in growing (WBS, Ryche hawk casing) made this question valid enough to be asked again, from a pickers perspective.

"Why would you grow when you can pick?"

Are grown mushrooms more potent? Is it safer? What makes it worth it to you? If you were in an area that had plentiful shrooms would you rather be picking or growing? Is it worth the money/time spent, why? Do you plan on continuing well into the future and not pick? Do you also pick? Which is more worth it?

Just thought I would get more new peoples opinions. With the resources available in the recent past (BRF and FUCKING CAKES) I could see why growing would be a huge pain in the arse. But nowadays it seems like you can get tons of shrooms for under $100 and conciel the whole thing in a footlocker if need be. So what is the new opinion on the ultimate shroom question? Where are yours coming from and why?

I live in florida and shrooms are plentyful during the season, one can easily get 5lbs wet in a day, but tis not the season so I grow, plus it's really fun to grow I do it even when it is season just cuz I like it so much. ime homegrown mushrooms are more potent than wild ones, plus you know they're clean, the ones we get on the field often are infested with beetles (I think they're called psilocybe beetles, not sure) which isn't that big a deal cuz most of them fly out during picking but I've cooked tea many a time to find beetles or worse maggots in it and drank it anyway (hey I wanna trip ) Plus I never had the balls to ask the farmer for permission to be on his field so I'm usually always breaking the law while hunting, and yeah growing is illegal but no one knows about that, and I don't like getting shot at, something that has happened before on a field (well he shot a shotgun in the air not at us but still) and they fuckin slashed the tires on my friends truck. I dunno I do both it depends, hunting can be fun and so can growing, I doubt I'll be hunting as much this year since I've gotten bulk down and there is really no need, might as well let the other kids get them, I do want to get some Copes this year though

Shrooms only grow wild for about 2 or 3 months a year up here. So the rest of the year shrooms are scarcer than a legal age virgin.

Not everyone lives near places where you can pick mushrooms. Secondly, not everyone wants to gamble whether what they're picking is truly what they want.

I grow because it's fun and i'm thinking about actually taking some courses in botanism. anyways, it's just fun, you get a nice satisfaction when you pick your shrooms and do whatever you do w/ them.

i'd personally suggest growing your own, you'll learn a thing or 2

yeh growing is even more fun than picking. I lived in FL and the wild shrooms are WAY more potent than cultivated. I have since moved north, and they don't grow wild here during the winter.

nope thats what I found in most fields in SW FL, but wild potency varies widely. The best field in my home town had shrooms you didn't want to eat more than 5-6 of!

1 reason and one reason only: Laboratory grade, baby!
Mushrooms in the wild can have a 4 fold difference in potency. Mushrooms grown indoors can be up to 4 times more potent than their outdoor counterparts because you can control the conditions. Therefore you can cultivate cubensis that have potency on par or exceeding that of azures. Not every single shroom will be uniformly potent. But when you are watching the Gods play pinball with the stars off of 3.5 G of the best shrooms you have ever done (which you have grown) you will know this, man!

It appeals to us on a number of levels, it satisfies our botanical urges and most of all it makes us feel incredibly proud of the fruits of our labor.

I think in asking this question, you are coming from a very understandably utilitarian point of view.  For the picker there is only mushrooms (or not).

It is best to think of it this way, you are thinking about the finish line when the simple straightforward answer is that there is a lot of magic to be experienced getting there.
