How long does it take for cakes to pin?
    #2256218 - 01/20/04 03:43 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Just wondering how long it takes for cakes to pin once put in terrarium? BTW when making substrate jars does substrate supposed to look matted? I just made 6 today, and substrate seems matted and not loose. Did I do something wrong? I used 6 cups verm, 2cups honey water, 1 cup cold water, 3 cups brf.

Do you mean how long does it take to pin after the cake is fully colonized, or how long does it take to colonize and then pin. if its the first, it could be anywhere from 2 days to 2weeks depending on conditions, and if you mean with colonization then it takes any where from 3weeks to 2 months depending on conditions. hope that helps

ok cakes are fully colonized.... um why would you put UNCOLONIZED cakes in a terrarium...? Anyway, anyone have any feedback on the other part of my question?

could be lots of reasons.

for one, when you were putting the substrate in the jars, did you pack it in there? or just spoon in it?

i personally spoon it in and just smal the jar on the counter a couple of times (no more than a couple, cause you dont want it getting too dense).

i've never used honey water either, that sounds like a good idea

hope that helps a bit.

I bet that honey water isn't a good idea. Where did you get the idea that it was?

And if you pack the sub in the jars tight it will never grow, that kinda sounds like where you went wrong.

Except for that honey water in your substrate thing, that still sounds odd.

honey makes things sticky mang.

fill pf jars 1/2-2/3 full, polyfill instead of dry verm. break up by whacking on the floor while HOT from the PC. That breaks em up and they can be shaken. colonization in 1-2 weeks using liquid myc. Pins show up when they want too. 1-4 weeks after going into a terrarium.

Actually I got the honey water Idea from another Tek. I have it somewhere on my PC. I think there is something about the extra sugar that the shrooms like. I guess I will find out when I grow em. I did spoon it in but I didn't tamp it down at all. I had one jar that I did tamp down and it still is only 80% colonized.. since November. I noticed that the substrate seemed more wet this time than it did last time. But last time I used Rye flour this time I used BRF.
