Hey Amanita,

The chips CAN be a real good reminder, for lots of people.
My niece tattooed her sobriety date on her wrist!  She's only 20-something, and is that committed to the program.  So, for her, it's a great reminder when things get sketchy to see that & recall why she is still alive today.
Gerry Garcia (RIP) had a good story about a unwanted trip, which he used later as a reminder of why he was doing what he's doing on the stage- "I'm playing for my life"

That is so very true.  It's not all the stuff I lost, it's my life that's on the line.  Sometimes it seems it don't matter, but like they say "this to shall pass"
Damn I'm sick of the slogans.... Ha-ha!
An oldtimer I know thought AA was making bank on all the bumper stickers and whatnot, and wanted 'in on the action' until he found out where the $ goes....
Raises a chuckle now.  Alright I'm ramblin' hard here.
I pass

Gave up on festishizing being clean months ago. Started brewing my own wines and beers. Money issue is gone and I've learned to pace myself. Overall Im happy, most would consider this "the wrong path to go down". I think its liberating. I can brew up 25 gallons of 20% wine for 80 bucks. Thats a win in my books.

Cool, my cousin wins awards with his delicious fruit wines.
But, this is an AA forum, and some of us just can't drink and be OK with it.  I thought I could, and probably can still drink 99.99% of people under the table, but my drinking led to severely aberrant behavior, psychosis, poor health and destitution... So, for me, it's better that I just don't start.

I'm gonna be 48, and the choices I made with active alcoholism not only nearly cost me my life, but the respect, trust, and confidence of everybody that knew me for those ~20 years.  Still working to clear that mess up.
So, go ahead and do what you will, I sure don't need to hear about it in THIS forum and the 'real alcoholic' that may reach out for help doesn't need to hear it either, IMO.
If you thought you were an alcoholic, but then discovered you can handle a few no problem, you most likely are NOT an alcoholic- But- (truth always comes after the but) If you ever go high-side crash & burn like....mentally/physically/emotionally/spiritually bankrupt ever (or again), AA will always welcome you back, no judgement.
Thanks for sharing.
~peace~

I did that shit too, it was deeply rooted in my psychology, the alcohol just aggrevated it. Knowing that helped me overcome it.

What motivates you to post on this forum?
To prove something?  To persuade AA's to try your beer?
IDK
It's akin to volunteering for a suicide hotline and tell the caller that they can just direct their thoughts to a happy place, because I didn't die when I pulled the trigger, you won't either.  -And I saved money on poison, drugs, bullets, razors and rope to boot. -and everyone loves me now.
Nope, nope, nope.
It' all about 'willpower and control'.... NO, for us, it is not.

Ya know....dude is talking about making his wine and beer to save money.Once upon a time I would have been asking him questions on how to do it on such a tight budget because between lawyers fees, unpaid bills, cigarettes, cocaine and whatever else you could throw in the mix, I was always looking to cut my costs.

Thank God, life isn't like that anymore for me....but, I will tell you this....It's been over 18 yrs. since I had my last drink but in my mind, right this second, I can taste the difference between a Budweiser and a Yuengling. That ain't normal....I think I'm in the right place.

Yeah- right on..

I was making 'kilju' from yeast & sugar & H2O, and could get a pretty potent brew for way cheap.  Nice and bubbly with little taste to it....

Anyways, enough on the history lesson.  You're right about the creative mind of the alcoholic.  We can ALWAYS find a way to drink, but not always have the $$ for food, rent, and all.
Pretty screwed up priorities I had.

But, I'm glad that the creativeness hasn't gone away, it takes a 'different paths' now.  Like mushrooming- I'm fruiting my first Blue and pink oysters presently.
Never in a million years would I have even dreamed of cultivating mushrooms 'before', 'cause someone said it was difficult to do.  Difficult?  Well pffftt- I'm not doin' THAT!  I mean, riding 9 miles one-way in the fall rain on bicycle to look for apartment that's close to employment, court ordered therapy, and right behind the liquor store is easy...
Why try so hard for something that might fail once or twice?
Ha-ha...
Crazy is as crazy does.

Yeah 'normal' people don't reason that way.

I've been sober for four days. I'm going to have a drink today because it's my day off. But I continue my journey tomorrow. Not drinking didn't drive me as crazy as I thought it would.

Hey Proxac, welcome,

I didn't have a problem w/drinking either.
It was the odd occasion that other's would even perceive I was, in fact drunk- 'cuz I can 'hold my liquor'
What happened is this:
Those rare occasions where some trouble occurred when drinking came closer together over years.  The intensity of 'troubles' increased, along with the periodicity.
After 4 drunk driving tickets, 2 jail sentences, and lots of money spent to 'fix' the troubles, I didn't have a problem w/drinking.
Didn't have problems every time I drank, but the problems always happened when I was drunk- see the connection?- I didn't want to either.
So, If you're here, I suspect some trouble occurred related to drinking.
In my case, there were many periods of 'no problem' drinking, BUT, the inevitable binge/drunk would happen at some point.
Every encounter with court-ordered therapist/classes/whatever told me that: If I was an alcoholic, these fuck-ups would continue to happen, as long as I continued drinking.
AA says: "why don't you try some controlled drinking, bearing in mind what we told you about alcoholisn'

I was like: 'Yeah- fuck you!

Then there's the 'bottom' the worst experience ever that jolts something in you that orders one to survive.
Bottom could be a ticket, a fight w/spouse, etc... leading up to insanity, institutions, and finally death.
The trick is to catch the disease before that last one, because if you are truly alcoholic, you may not get caught, have issues with family, work, friends (who most likely drink heavily), etc. But, the poor health leading to premature death WILL happen.

It's up to you to decide IF you're alcoholic.
Up to you if you want to do anything about it.

Oh, and if didn't have all the shakes, sweats, convulsions, inability to eat solids so on and so forth, I would assume that you're what those beginning guys called 'scarcely more than a potential alcoholic'
I call those people "miracles" because they caught themselves in time.
~peace~

All my shroomery bans have happened while I was drunk and/or benzo’d out.  Probably just a coincidence....

Vince here, fellow alcoholic.

Funny thing, all my interactions with police happened in my teens and 20's.
A year in jail at age 25 cured me of my :syringe:coke, meth and H use,
but my affair with alcohol took off.

I was a functioning  alcoholic all throughout my career, no DUI's, very few sick days.
I drank every day, sometimes starting around 10AM, certainly by lunch, did a lot of drunk driving, never arrested
(well once in Georgia when I was about 30, spent the night in the drunk tank, no charges filed)

At 50 or so, my old knee and shoulder injuries really started to bother me, plus the realization that
I really am getting older and my working days were winding down, my drinking really took off.
Drinking in the morning, not eating right, my attitude got shitty and my job let me go.

Now I could drink how I wanted, all day every day, I started drinking vodka, hard
and I found my bottom when I went to the ER.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15798817#15798817
You'd think That brush with death would have learned me but no, I needed to to do more research on alcoholism. :faded:
I did stay dry for a few months but quickly returned to my daily heavy drinking and continued for more than a year.

I decided to detox my self and ended up back in the ER, major DT's,
seriously in bad shape. I spent a week in Intensive care. This was in November.
A month later, still drinking, I was back in the ER, internal bleeding, shakes, sweating, chills,
and another 5 days in Intensive care.

That was my last bottom, The thrill was gone. I was 57 years old and I was done. I found a 28 day
detox/rehab place and began my attempt at sober living.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19502108#19502108

3 years and 9 months later and I haven't had a drop. The cravings went away 2 years ago.
My liver took a hit though. I had been living with HCV that I probably got in 1980 something
and I needed to be alcohol free for 6 months before I could get treatment.
I got treatment, it was successful and the virus is gone, but not before cirrhosis set in.
I just has an ultrasound and extensive blood work and I'll get results next week.

Today I just don't drink, I go to meetings 3 to 5 times a week,
and I try to talk to an alcoholic every day.
I aim for progress, not perfection.

tl;dr too bad

Sobriety saved my life and granted me an extension.
You younger folk should take care of this disease sooner than later.
It won't get any easier.

Love you guys... . . . :peace:
