I have an aspect.. check this out..
I'm a drinker..yeah. But my brother is about 2 times as deep. He's still going hard. I have about 16 grand in ICU bills due to his aggressions..because sometimes you get sucker punched.. I don't know or care what bills he has from me sending him to the hospital..
As bad as that sounds..we don't leave family behind here..apparently we'll fuck them up though.
I was born late, in an older family..it's pretty much my pops, uncle, brother and me.. pops and uncle are going to go. The way of the world.
Anyone ever get crossed with those thoughts of just cutting someone off, but at the same time.. pretty soon it's just him and me. And I'm going to get real cynical walking this world alone.
You know what I'm saying? Being "trapped" with him.. that shit makes me worry. There's a lot of elements to this equasion. It's a multi faceted situation..
Either way.. sometimes family can be what keeps you going.. sometimes it's what fuckin' kills you..
Some people just don't mature past 18 years old. They just stop.. they never see past the default "mindframe" and start growing that 'spiritual' aspect..
I suppose some people you just don't get along with.
I was going to go somewhere with this but.. fuck it, I'll either figure it out or I won't..

Not to say I agree with this but after being to hundreds of meetings I feel it's safe to say this thread would be highly frowned upon and unaccepted by the AA community at large.
I get what you're saying, but I think this thread is a very helpful addition to this forum.
I am 17 days sober from alcohol. I survived an extremely stressful event, and then a weekend with my family without even a craving!!!

If you choose not to believe in God. You would still be widely accepted.
Think of some other acronym that helps you distance yourself from the church bullshit, if that's going to save you from a potential life of perilous drinking.
OP - Should start a sub forum.. for like, have your own moderation persons. This subject "AA" is probably going to incite a lot of discrepancies (in a bad way) Just my thoguhts

Nothing like to be court ordered to go to AA. What ever acronyms you want to use it is a place for smoking, coffee, and getting laid.

After seeing how highly the diehards of AA pride themselves on following the literature and to a T I just find it ironic that justfortoday who is obviously an AA die hard would not only start this thread but have an account on here at all.
I have nothing against him or AA but I'm sure that it goes without saying that over 9/10 people who have completely the twelve steps would frown upon this forum and the idea that a discussion using the model of an AA mtg exists within it.

Connoisseur, we get your point, lol. And it's totally valid.
In my own experience, I'm almost 4 years away from a drink but reset my date count to 6 months ago because I was using psychedelics during that time, n my sponsor and network frowned upon that. You're not really sober if you're using ANY mood and mind altering substance, which I totally agree with, because all it is is another form of escape, which makes us addicts in the first place.
However, I do think this thread is a good thing for this community. When I signed up to this site, I was broken and lost, mentally n spiritually. I've grown a LOT since then, and have since made a lot of friends in the "real" world, but I'd imagine that there's many in this thread who aren't comfortable enough with themselves to go out and be social and make friends, so the shroomery is sort of their safe haven, their social network so to speak. So while I agree that an AA thread being on this site is contradictory, I do think it serves a purpose.
Hope all you fellow alchies out there are doing well. Bunny, keep up the good work

Lol. people at the local club that i go to most of my meetings at use "Group of Drunks" and say AA itself is their higher power

I think thats nonsense myself. Lots of people who are in AA also use anti-depressants or need to use seizure medication. Plus, tobacco and caffeine are both mood/mind altering substances and huge portion of the people who go to AA use them. Then you also have alot of people who use hydroxyzine or valerian tea, etc to help them sleep
I havn't been in the program long but ive never heard anyone say that those things are unacceptable.
i would personally get pissed off if someone said i wasnt sobor because i use an anti-depressant and sleepytime tea. those arent even comparable to alcohol.
i dont use psychs anymore but it wouldnt bother me at all if someone said they used them.
Bill Wilson himself experimented with LSD in the 50s and said it could be of great use, although not a replacement for AA by any means

The "mood or mind altering substances"people so often refer to does not come from the big book...nowhere is that phrase written in the basic text....it was added on somewhere along the line and has been generally accepted as criteria to help people get sober. I've been around AA since 1989 and have been sober since 1999. During my sober years, I've sponsored probably 50 or 60 people and have been regarded, in my home group as a "old-timer". The big book tells us to stay away from "vicarious pleasures"and that is what I do....I do not use psychs as a have fun,get high drug...I use them as a spiritual adjustment. Now, I know some in AA that don't agree with this but I also have met and know of people who tell their pigeons to stop taking anti-depressants or other physician prescribed medications. One of these pigeons hung herself trying to get sober. I will debate anyone in the program that goes by these ...mood or mind altering rules and will advise anyone I know to stay the fuck away from those people. AA tells us to be available to anyone that reaches out for help....well, there are people on this forum that need help and if anyone told me that this is the wrong place for them to seek help...I would advise them to re-read the big book. So...if this thread doesn't gibe with your tastes, then don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

Gresh, I wasn't talking about prescription medication, or any natural substances for that matter. I should have clarified that.
I'm talking about mood or mind altering substances that people use to escape, not to increase their sense of well being. I.e, people in NA who say they're clean, but then get shitfaced from Friday-Sunday. I also know a guy in AA who says he has 4 years of sobriety, but still occasionally abuses prescription painkillers, because he's in "pain", and they're not prescribed.

If people have that much of a problem with this being called AA, we can change the name of the thread to something else.
18 days clean & sober from alcohol. It's amazing house quickly the clarity and lightness of sobriety translates into better quality of life and work. Can't wait to see how things change a year from now!!!

There is already a user created forum for Addiction Support & Rehab: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Board/160
It's not active at all, but if people want me to move this thread there I can.

I think the thread is doing fine as is...wouldn't change the name. There are a bunch of peeps that only know about AA through others biased opinions. I like the ability to set people straight on what AA is and what it isn't. A lot of people think AA is like a cult or something...it isn't...it's just a program to help rebuild your life without having to rely on alcohol...A program that many people avoid until they have exhausted all other resources, like me.

Agreed. Most people just want this thread shut down because of some resentment. Anyone who has a problem with this thread simply don't post or hide. This is for people who desires to stop drinking or using. People come here for support.

3 weeks today!
It feels simultaneously like no time at all & an eternity.
I don't even crave the taste of red wine anymore. I thought about it last night, and the thought of it actually made me physically nauseated.

24 days today.
This is around the time that I caved last time around. Some cravings have been creeping in, but nothing serious. I went out to dinner with my boyfriend, his mom and some of her friends on Saturday night and everyone drank. It was not easy for me, and I don't really think I'm ready to be in that situation, so next time I'm invited to something like that I might politely say no.
Was excited to see some press on sober social gatherings going around this week. Did y'all happen to catch any of that?
