OK

I'm going to pray and see if I get the spirit

Dear God,

Please strike me dead tonight and send me to hell.

Amen

Let's see if my prayer is answered or if in fact there is no God.

I'll let you know in the morning if my prayer was answered. Unless it is.

Dear God, could you please help the people who are oblivious to your existance as well as their own stop whining and talking shit about how they're too dumb to realize they're alive in the real sense.  Thank you.

Day 1 guys.  I had a good 3 month run, got some vodka to break the monotony, got sick of it with a quickness and am back on the sober track.

You know, failure or not the quick run I had with the vodka refreshed my thinking in that alcohol is really lame.  There really is no fun to it.  It's just a problem, for me...anyone else can do whatever of course.

It really was just a glimpse into old patterns etc.  So, we'll see how long I go this time.  I will say, unfortunatly, the consequences pick up right where I left off.  The shakes etc, dreams...they come back as if I never stopped at all.  It's in there to stay.

Such is life.  Hella props to everyone who stayed sober today, and here's to doing it one more time.  There's a great big world out there and it's hard to see when you're eyeballing the bottom of a bottle of vodka.. -:peace:

...hopefully I can dry out without any problems.  I'm feeling a bit shakey and have a feeling tomorrow is going to be a rough one.  May God be with me as always and not let me screw up beyond repair.  Easy does it..

You really DO NOT have to "believe" in "God" for prayer to work.

It's actually neuroscience.

By actively replacing thoughts that lead you toward the bottle with thoughts that help you stay away from it,  you are paving new neural pathways.

This is why prayer works.

I recommend the book "You are the Placebo" by Dr. Joe Dispenza

Wow really interesting thread I am kind of on the fence however if I am an alcoholic or not. I only drink once a week its a lot usually half a bottle of scotch then the other six days of the week I am sober. I've never had a dui or lost a job due to drinking however my once a week binge is a habit I've had for several years.

Actually the placebo effect is predicated on false beliefs

In fact that's exactly what it means

Quote:

pla·ce·bo ef·fect
pləˈsēbō əˈfekt,ēˈfekt/
noun
a beneficial effect, produced by a placebo drug or treatment, that cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must therefore be due to the patient's belief in that treatment.

I personally find it pretty amazing that human beings can and do heal themselves physically, mentally and emotionally with belief.

That's great. But it's not applicable to people who don't believe. You can pray for me all you want but it doesn't help me because there's nothing out there.

If you don't believe in God it gets fucking old after awhile. Especially when it gets worded up like God is the only way. I can't eat skittles and pretend it's penicillin.

I don't actually believe in "God" either, man.

Neither does my  sponsor, or a ton of people with long term sobriety i know. The difference is we just learned to stop tripping up on the word.

My Higher Power is the Universe, reality, love, the program/fellowship, etc.

For some people, the HP is some vague energy/creative force.

For some, it's a slightly more traditional conception of God.

And for some it's the God of a specific religion.

All of these conceptions can work just fine.

Also, i pray asking "God" to help me stay clean and sober every day, especially when i see people shooting up or obviously loaded and find myself triggered. It's just a way to interrupt the thought patterns and reaffirm what I'm trying to do with my life. It's building new neural pathways as YogaBunny mentioned.

If you say using a higher power concept can and does help people get and stay sober I'm fine with that. But when it stretches into the you can't do it without a higher power I get fucking hostile. Atheism is becoming more and more accepted and common and whether people want to admit it or not AA rolls with the changes just like everything else. Non-believers have a place in AA and fuck any bullshit I have to believe this or that to stay sober.

What you're talking about is actually touched on in satanism with "speaking" things into existence.  It's not all David Copperfield and Harry Houdini, despite what some would lead you to believe, there are sentient "things" you can contact "out there".  Most, whether dark or light refuse to "cast their pearls before swine"

(Matthew 7:6-7, "Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. 7, Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.)

Just because you consider something "normal" or can see it's progression under a microscope and find words to explain the action or somehow bring it into "normalcy" doesn't mean what you're watching is not the direct hand of God in action.

That's why people can't see it, they live in "normal" and have removed all magic from their lives.
