Thanks for sharing that man. I love hearing rigorous honesty such as that. It's funny because I rarely see that in meetings not on the web. The forums allow anonymity on another level. It's kinda cool, something I've just been realizing. As for what I've read, and my own experience, I can say honestly that I wouldn't have gotten clean if the pain wasn't so great. It's different for each person, and some people's pain threshold is greater than other's. IMO, that's why we have people that die from this disease. I know when I decided to get clean, my entire life was at stake. Not my lifestyle, but my actual capability to own my spot here on earth. It was a choice between the grave and another shot. That's the entire point for me. I just wanted to know how to not do drugs for the hour that I was in that room with a bunch of other addicts. And I learned how by following little suggestions, and mimiking parts of their program. Now I go back to not only share what I've learned to help the still suffering addict, but to find ways to continue improving my life. I built a foundation on which I now have a life worth living. But the real kicker is that it's a life worth living CLEAN. I learned it was entirely possible to enjoy life without drugs and alcohol. It IS entirely possible to enjoy life MORE than when I was high or drunk. It's crazy. My suggestion is to stick around people that have the disease of addiction/alcoholism and are doing something about it that works. Just find a way to stay clean for one hour that works. Then repeat it. Again. And again. And again. They add more cool shit to that. You have the potential and capability to make you're future amazing. I believe in you.

Thanks for the shares everyone. Due to my new work schedule. I will be unable to attend the live meeting here. I'm turning it over to Mark and once others see how it is run, it can change every month to a new member to chair the meeting. Cheers all!

Blue Indian....this is the classic "one foot in and one foot out" way that will inevitably lead to a fucked up ending. I have seen a whole lot of people approach the "program" of AA this way.
In "How it Works", it says...and I have witnessed this over and over..."Half measures availed us nothing". It doesn't say half measures availed us half sobriety....it says "nothing".

You just got a broken arm...a friend of mine that was in and out of the program last year fell down his concrete basement steps and fractured his skull and died before anyone found him. This disease wants us dead and it doesn't care how long it takes to get us there. Willpower may work occasionally for us drunks but inevitably will eventually cave in to its higher power...booze.

We will be having an online meeting tonight at 9 EST. Shane seems to think I should chair it. Please come join us...Mark, alcoholic.

Tonight's meeting will be at 9 EST. Shane seems to think I should chair it...although having chaired over a thousand reg. AA meetings, I have never attempted one online.

We will start with the readings which I will simply repost Shanes first entry here that has all the readings. We can all read them for a couple minutes at first and then I will start the meeting based on the 1st step. Please  bring your big book with you because mostly all of the answers are in there.

I will begin by sharing how I relate myself to this most important step...and will then open the meeting up to anyone who wants to share.....We will close the meeting promptly at 10 with the serenity prayer.:sunny::peace:

What is AA?

This is what AA is and what AA does.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

How it works.

RARELY HAVE we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path. Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program, usually men and women who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves. There are such unfortunates. They are not at fault; they seem to have been born that way. They are naturally incapable of grasping and developing a manner of living which demands rigorous honesty. Their chances are less than average. There are those, too, who suffer from grave emotional and mental disorders, but many of them do recover if they have the capacity to be honest.

Our stories disclose in a general way what we used to be like, what happened, and what we are like now. If you have decided that you want what we have and are willing to go to any length to get it - then you are ready to take certain steps.

At some of these we balked. We thought that we could find an easier, softer way. But we could not. With all earnestness at our command, we beg of you to be fearless and thorough from the very start. Some of us have tried to hold on to our old ideas and the result was nil until we let go absolutely.

Remember that we deal with alcohol - cunning, baffling, powerful! Without help it is too much for us. But there is One who has all power—that One is God. May you find Him now! Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point. We asked His protection and care with complete abandon. Here are the steps we took, which are suggested as a program of recovery:

1.We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—
that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than our
selves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives
over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4.Made a searching and fearless moral inventory
of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another
human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6.Were entirely ready to have God remove all
these defects of character.

7.Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and
became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever
possible, except when to do so would injure
them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when
we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to im
prove our conscious contact with God
as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of
His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result
of these steps, we tried to carry this message to
alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all
our affairs.

Many of us exclaimed, “What an order! I can’t go through with it.’’ Do not be discouraged. No one among us has been able to maintain anything like perfect adherence to these principles. We are not saints. The point is, that we are willing to grow along spiritual
lines. The principles we have set down are guides to progress. We claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection. Our description of the alcoholic, the chapter to the agnostic, and our personal adventures before and after make clear three pertinent ideas:
(a)
That we were alcoholic and could not manage our own lives.
(b)
That probably no human power could have relieved our alcoholism.
(c)
That God could and would if He were sought.

The point of this thread is for anyone who wants to stay sober from alcohol and all other mind altering substances. Come in and share.

RULES!!!!

1. Please be respectful of other people who are sharing.

2. When sharing, please tell us who you are using your first name only and if you are an addict or alcoholic. If you're uncomfortable sharing openly, use the anonymous feature.

3. What is said here stays here. If anyone comes into this thread to stir things up or is found speaking about things here in other threads. I will ask an admin or mod to take action.

4. If you are celebrating the month we are currently in and would like to be recognized, please put your sober date, your first name and at the last saturday of the month I will come on here and ask you how you did it.

5. If you successfully have made it through your steps, that is a great achievement!! My homegroup I am apart of, we have made guitar picks for people who have finished their steps. They will be ready by January. Let me know if you have and i'll mail you one when we get them.

6. NEW RULE!!! If you are caught giving a bad rating because of this thread, I will notify the mods.

Before I open this thread for sharing, a few things to remember.

If you have a burning desire, if you wanna use, harm someone or harm someone. Please share this here or send me a PM.

SUGGESTIONS FOR THE NEWCOMER!

1. Do 90 meetings in 90 days
2. Get a sponsor
3. Find a homegroup because without one you are homeless

With that being said, I would like to read the promises!

THE A.A. PROMISES

If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and selfpity will disappear. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.

Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us—sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.

Hello everyone, I'm Mark....alcoholic. I would like to welcome you all to the first Shroomery online AA meeting. Perhaps we could begin with a moment of silence for the still suffering alcoholics both in and out of the rooms.

The first step was hard for me. It's actually only been recently that I could say the words "I'm an alcoholic".

As recently as 5 months ago I was still hoping that I could learn to moderate, but I'm happy to admit I am powerless now. Takes the pressure off in a way....

I had no problem with the unmanageable part of this step because things were so screwed up....I had DUI's stacked up, failed marriages, barely held a job...pretty much everything in my life was a complete mess. The part I couldn't get was the powerlessness part. I simply could not admit to anybody, including myself, that I was powerless over anything.
I had been to AA meetings for several years on a court slip before I got sober...held on to that powerless thing for wayyyy too long.

My moment of clarity came in a jail cell after having just been arrested for my 6th DUI ...not knowing what I'd done because I was in a blackout....That was the night that I saw my powerlessness ...because once again, what I had promised myself wasn't going to happen....did. I was powerless once I took that first drink...nothing I could say nor anything anyone else could say would matter...Once I had the first drink....all bets were off.Booze beat me and I was finally ok with that.
