Peer led meetings are the only way to do it, old members need to be reminded by the newcomers coming in, it’s refreshing. If there weren’t any more addicts in the world Aa wouldn’t exist either. I bet a lot of people are looking over this even today, “wondering if I should speak up” if we discourage them instead of nurture, it might scare them off. It shouldn’t matter how bad a situation may seem, it ain’t no worse.

Though you don't want someone who's drunk right now, or doesn't have a sponsor or never worked a program to lead a meeting.

Something I saw once that was great, and I think bears replication: a meeting where they'd open the meeting, a speaker would speak, then open it up for talking, like many meetings. But instead of the speaker or secretary calling on people, each person who speaks picks one of the people raising their hands. Speaker picks someone, they speak then pick someone, etc.

Then no one has reason to resent the speaker for not picking them.

Also good to leave time for the "Anyone have a burning desire to speak?" at the end anyway. I've heard that also as "Anyone going to drink if they don't speak?" but I think the "burning desire" is better.

Someone with years sober might not drink if their best friend dies, but might damn well need to talk about it in their home group after everyone shares about whatever happened to them on Facebook that day.

In treatment the last peer leaders would vote for the next round of leaders based on a number of things. I voted for someone younger who my other fellow leaders did not, but he showed the same dedication as anyone else. It comes full circle and most groups tend to do it this way. Obviously I’m not voting for the active alcoholic at meetings but anyone who’s working the program and doing meetings is more than able to lead. Most meetings I have been to have only been like this, anyone is open to talk or lead a certain topic if they so choose. Typically there is already a member who has volunteered to do this and then there is always a time or NEEDS to be a time for other fellow members to share or it’s not a meeting. Starting from the big book and going from there.

There's a lot of drug talk in my area. We even have people introduces themselves as addict instead of alcoholic or both alcoholic/ drug addict. We highly encourage it and see alcoholism as a universal addiction not just a drinking problem. My story starts with hard drugs and ended with the bottle. Unfortunately, there are AA groups/ people who don't like it. My advice for that is to find a different meeting. In my earlier post I was referring to medication for an illness in relation to recovery through AA, not just recovery in general. The program, as plain as can be, is the first 164 pages of the Big Book. No mention of using medication in there. I didn't mean bringing it up during a meeting is wrong, it's just not part of AA. Still can be a vital part of recovery as it is mine

I like that: "Anyone going to drink if they don't speak?" Might try it next meeting I chair along with our burning desire section, we have a couple active drinkers who can't get more than a week that frequent my home group.

I'm pretty sure somewhere in the bigbook says if a doctor prescribed it its alright, but I dont remember where

That AA pamphlet "Problems Other than Alcohol" says something like "God put doctors and psychiatrists here to help us with things AA can't treat" (I'm agnostic so who knows?) but also warns against hustling doctors (doesn't use that term, but that idea) to over prescribe and calls that "taking your alcohol in solid form."

you can read and certainly hear no end of stupidity at aa

false equivalencies and bullshit

the only advice i take seriously in those rooms is don't drink

i'm not saying there's no wisdom beyond that - there is - it's just not what i'm there for - i like my group and the peeps but let's be real they're there because they're fucked up and most of them believe fucked up shit

Meditation for the Day
“Except ye become as little children, ye cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” In this saying it is urged that all who seek heaven on earth or in the hereafter should become like little children. In seeking things of the spirit and in our faith, we should try to become childlike. Even as we grow older, the years of seeking can give us the attitude of the trusting child. Not only for its simple trust should we have the childlike spirit, but also for its joy in life, its ready laughter, its lack of criticism, and its desire to share. In Charles Dickens’s story A Christmas Carol, even old Scrooge changed when he got the child-spirit.

Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may become like a child in faith and hope. I pray that I may, like a child, be friendly and trusting.

Still sober.

Working out knocks lose some of the caked up emotional shit but lets you use the anger or resentment for energy while working out.

The important thing though is to process it afterwards so that it doesnt grow into something negative.

It’s the newcomers like you that makes it all work! Doing the good work and being true to ourselves is all we can really do now. Some days I’m high or low but the days where I’m just okay are the ones I savor. It’s okay to be okay! Mush love man, happy you found this thread. Congrats on sobriety, shit don’t stink as bad over here haha.

Thank you Koi  (grape juice)

I'm about to make 40 days w/o drinking, the farthest I've done w/o drinking ever since I can remember for over a decade

I've also stopped smoking weed temporarily about 2 weeks ago, not because I believe weed to be bad - quite the opposite, but decided to so for personal gain/reasons

As a consequence, I've begun dreaming every night very vividly again.

This is fun, but I don't take anything for granted

Happy 24 hours my friend :coffee:

may you & all recovering alcoholics from shroomery have a blessed day today :shroomeryhead:
