Glad to see y'all are working a program of some sort, because it doesn't matter how you arrive at the destination, it just matters that you make it!!! I say do whatever it takes, if AA works, that's great, we just have to find our own paths to sobriety and sometimes, we may have to cut a fresh trail through untested land.

So I've been trying to quit for about 2 years now. I will get anywhere from a month to about 100 days under my belt and then something always happens and I'll binge hard for a week or 10 days. Then I will feel like complete shit for about 2 weeks, mostly from anxiety and depression, and fear of dying from this addiction. I've been sober for almost a month now and just said no to going to the bar for my fiance's birthday tonight. I know where that will lead.

I am wondering if anyone has had success in using mushrooms to treat this horrible affliction. Either a macro or micro dose situation. I am also tempted to start smoking weed again (it's been 7 years or so) but I feel like there's such a large hurdle of anxiety/paranoia/racing thoughts to overcome before I could actually enjoy it again.

I miss the good old days when I would just smoke weed and not drink. I hate alcohol and the grip it has on my mind. It's like a devil on my shoulder at all times, constantly looking for an excuse to tell me to drink.

IMO tripping can really bring home how ruinous your addiction is and that self-reflection can help but the path to getting past the hurdles you’re describing is going to meetings, calling on your sponsor, and taking to heart the one day at a time mantra. You need a support system for the breakdown. When you know you’re going to drink you don’t. You go to a meeting and call your sponsor instead. I don’t believe you can trip your way out of this problem. It might help but you have to put in the work. It’s a long haul.

5 years in and I still go to meetings. I’ll stop when I’m dead.

your stuck on the wheel of misfortune, also when the mind and body heals, the liar comes back to say its okay to use, itll be different this time, ive had some sober time maybe im not an addict

We are without defense against the first drink. The idea (lie) that somehow someday he will control and enjoy his drinking is the great obsession of every abnormal drinker. Over any considerable period we get worse, never better. Many pursue it to the gates of insanity and death.

it might work, probly not, ive had profound thought changes on mushrooms, but I cant control what  they will be, I took mushrooms trying to have insight into one thing, but then never even thought about that during the trip, instead having a realization I shouldnt quit my psychiatric meds, the mushrooms will do what they want

I super related, started toking at 14, and didnt nearly destroy my life as bad as alcohol, but the addiction still caused me to do some things im ashamed of, but nothing like booze, but at around age 22 it started making me have delusional thoughts, I cant touch the stuff without my mind making me think a nightmare exists that dosnt, also, my addictive personality is so fucked, ill steal to support my weed addiction, I know most people wouldnt, but I have before, and afraid I would in the future if I started again

Booze is a great escape drug. Psychedelics are often the opposite of an escape, they can bring up all the thoughts and emotions that you drink to escape from.

They can be great for getting insight on the root of your problem and inspiration to quit. They can be dangerous in that sometimes after a trip the ego seems to grow a thicker shell as almost some sort of defense mechanism to protect against future trauma like what happened to it on the trip... giving even more motivation to seek out the booze.

Reflection/integration are always an integral part of the psychedelic experience, skip those steps and you may end up worse than you were before

Thefakesunra, gopher, feevers: Thank you all very much for your thoughtful responses. I knew nothing of this wheel of misfortune but that definitely describes my situation. I know a trip won't cure me instantly but was just wondering if it had helped anyone. I need to get a copy of the big book and find a meeting. Thanks again to you all!

Yes!!!! It will help in my experience and not just with alcohol, but negative lifestyles in general.

I don't know if you're doing what I and many others have done, but I would get some clean time and convince myself that I got this and can have one, that sets off the whole cycle again.  LSD and mushrooms have both been beneficial in correcting this behavior. Start with a low dose if you're new to psychedelics, because bad experiences are dose related. Do NOT  let a single bad experience ruin it for you, try again at a lower dose.

These substances won't cure you, but they can and will help you gain some insight into the destructive patterns and have over multiple uses helped me to develop an aversion to certain substances, but I do actively meditate and make recovery a central focus during most of  my sessions.  I try to get my mind into that frame before and during the session. Sometimes, it's almost like watching a movie of my life that focuses on the wrong turns that I've made, the consequences of those actions and the possible out comes if I don't do something different.

There's no magic one time cure, but LSD and magic mushrooms are a use tool for many of us, but I urge caution if there's any family or personal issues with mental illness, such as schizophrenia and/or bi-polar disorders, as I have personally seen them cause suicidal ideation and other disorders come to the surface in people who have history or family history of mental illness.

That's great to hear Doc! My mental health is improving day by day as I stay away from the poison and I am getting ready to make some very big changes in my life. Change things that make me feel like a failure, which is why deep down that I probably drink. Maybe Tuesday or Wednesday I'll do a lemon tek on a gram or 2. Peaceful music, incense, relaxation.... That kind of thing, seeking answers and guidance.

Fair.

I can be reductionistic to the point of idiocy but the brain dead simplicity of don’t drink works for me.

There’s no reasoning beyond it.

My brain will say hey you’re taking off work your bills are paid your parents died your dog died it’s not going to hurt anything to just give yourself the mercy of a nice solid hard drunkenness.

But then my stupid ass lizard brain takes over and says bitch what fucking part of don’t drink are you confused about.

Alcohol is “cunning baffling powerful”

But you can’t argue with don’t drink.

Hope everyone is doing well. I am committing to quitting drinking today after drinking last night. I for sure have problematic genetics and I can feel things spiraling out of control. Mostly though it is my whole next day is shot after drinking and the physical toll, weight gain. Basically, started this winter after years of drinking once or twice a year.
I know I have trigger points at a week out, 2 weeks out and a month.
