We DO need a friendly hand.

Alcohol is so insidious because of well much it's accepted and celebrated in our society. It's so attached to all of our celebrations and big life events. I want to get back to that place where I could be out and just not even care, not even crave it, and then be so happy to wake up clear headed day after glorious day!!!!

Nicole, alcoholic.

I'm kind of in the same boat as Malcom. I am still drinking but my drinking has reduced drastically in the past couple of months. That being said, I know myself well enough to know that it can really easily swing back to my usually bottle of wine per day in an instant.

I want to be sober.

Yet again and again I watch myself mindlessly drive to the store and buy a bottle of wine.

I think the last rationalizations that I'm hanging onto are 1) somehow drinking only red wine makes me fancy 2) I deserve it.

The longest I've gone alcohol free was 3 months in 2014. I thought that was it. The starting and stopping and failing at sobriety over and over again also just gives me a FUCK IT attitude.

Thanks!

I forgot another rationalization which is that I am super high functioning, which oftentimes leads to me decided that I DESERVE those drinks.

Then there's the other part of me that is just sick sick sick of needing alcohol, waking up foggy and headachey, and not feeling completely authentic in my career because of alcohol problem.

I haven't done cocaine in almost two years, thankfully, but it was a regular part of my routine for a long time....

I don't think anyone but you & I can view that thread. You have to have over 2,222 (or something like that) days registered to view the Vet forum.

Nicole, alcoholic.

I only had one glass of wine yesterday, zero today, huzzah!

I committed to this daily streaming guided meditation at 7am M-F to try and help curb my evening drinking, we'll see how that goes. Tomorrow is Day 2 of that.

Hey.

Hope you're feeling better today. If not you know there are a bunch of links in a thread that's stickied at the top of this forum that might be beneficial if you're still feeling that way.

I am on Day 3 sober from alcohol. I want to really do it this time. It may be time for me to attend some 12 step meetings just to see. It's just about the only thing I have not tried yet.....

Thanks!

:bunnypeace:

It's been coming pretty easily this time. I turned 35 in September and my health is starting to deteriorate. I've realized that my body just can't take it anymore. I have Joint Hyper-mobility Syndrome and my blood sugar is testing as pre-diabetic. I can either continue down the path of alcoholism and end up need to shoot myself up with insulin and probably get a knee replacements before I'm 50; OR I can take charge of my health and wellness.

With the JHS diagnosis I am taking a very mild dose of a beta blocker metoprolol to help with heart palpitations and anxiety. I'm hoping that will help me even more to stay away from self-medicating with alcohol.

Because I've been to AA mtgs hundreds of times in several different states and if any of the people who actually finished the 12 steps that I have met over the years knew this existed they would say there is no way anyone who actively uses any intoxicating substances knows a thing about the real experiences of AA or can speak even a shred of wisdom about sobriety.

Not to say I agree with this but after being to hundreds of meetings I feel it's safe to say this thread would be highly frowned upon and unaccepted by the AA community at large.

I get what you're saying, but I think this thread is a very helpful addition to this forum.

I am 17 days sober from alcohol. I survived an extremely stressful event, and then a weekend with my family without even a craving!!!

If people have that much of a problem with this being called AA, we can change the name of the thread to something else.

18 days clean & sober from alcohol. It's amazing house quickly the clarity and lightness of sobriety translates into better quality of life and work. Can't wait to see how things change a year from now!!!

There is already a user created forum for Addiction Support & Rehab: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Board/160

It's not active at all, but if people want me to move this thread there I can.

3 weeks today!

It feels simultaneously like no time at all & an eternity.

I don't even crave the taste of red wine anymore. I thought about it last night, and the thought of it actually made me physically nauseated.

24 days today.

This is around the time that I caved last time around. Some cravings have been creeping in, but nothing serious. I went out to dinner with my boyfriend, his mom and some of her friends on Saturday night and everyone drank. It was not easy for me, and I don't really think I'm ready to be in that situation, so next time I'm invited to something like that I might politely say no.

Was excited to see some press on sober social gatherings going around this week. Did y'all happen to catch any of that?

The funny thing is the actually thought of drinking wine made me sick to my stomach, it was just pure jealously. Jealous of the fact that other people can just have a couple of drinks of wine with dinner and leave it at that.

If I do start going to meetings and working the 12 steps, I think I am going to wait until after my boyfriend and I have landed in our new location (March 1st). Then I will really feel like I can dive in and commit to having a official sponsor, etc.

I'm also doing this online conference called Recovery 2.0 later on this month, which I'm really looking forward to.
