Even Pinset?
    #2253257 - 01/19/04 03:38 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

How do you get an even pinset? Any steps made to make sure this happens?
And also, last time a buddy of mine made a casingonly a few of the shrooms grew out and the rest of the pins stayed one size ...it stayed this way for a few days then he had to throw it out for certain reasons.

Thanks

I thinks patch casing after incubation will help with the pinset, but I'm just getting started on casings....:)

to get a good even pin set depends on a lot of factors...RH, temp, light, and a lot of time the strain. prolly the best way to get a good pin set is when you cover your substrate whith your casing layer get it as even as possible...cover and let it mature in a dark warm place for a while misting if nesscary, if you see some mycelium starting to pop out by it's self in lone spots, patch it. wait until you see little white strands of mycelium all over and in equal proportion, then induce fruiting.make sure that youre light is even distributed, no dark areas on the casing. with casings, keep your RH a little lower. and it would prolly be best to drop the temp to 55-60 for a day or two, then bring back up to the mid 70's. at least it seems to work for all my friends

An even casing layer is very important like llamaboy said. You can use depth rings to achieve this. I just took some 1 inch wide strips of cardboard and arranged them into a grid. Or you can cut off the ends of some PVC pipe to make actual rings. Also, having constant temps and RH levels is fairly important. Giving the casing layer some valleys is helpful as it gives the casing more surface area, which allows for more pin formations. Patch casing is something everyone should practice. This should also be done between flushes. I wish you the best of luck.

Can you explain this?

Most certainly. The depth rings are simply rings of an even thickness. You can cut the ends off of some pipe. Say you want a 1 inch thick casing layer, just cut off 1 inch pieces. Then just lay them evenly over the substrate and then apply your casing material, using the rings to indicate how deep the casing is. Then you gently remove the rings and you're left with a nice even casing layer. And don't forget to patch case when you see the first signs of the mycelium making it's way up through the casing. This is to allow the rest of the mycelium to catch up. One thing that helps with all of this is to have an even substrate to begin with. Good Luck!

I feel I should also add this. The rings you want to use should be several inches in diameter. Say 3"-5"
