question about rat diet
    #2254305 - 01/19/04 09:11 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

Okay so for school Im doing an experiment with rats. I have 6 rats as a control and three groups of rats that are not controls. The control rats are being fed a diet based on egg whites that should provide them with all essential nutrients. The other rats are being fed a soy based diet. The egg white rats look like shit, they are losing hair, lethargic, just shitty health. THe soy rats arent doing great but they are doing much better than the control rats. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

because egg whites have almost nothing but protein and soy is the same?

what's the reason behind this experiment...eggs and soy are almost all protein...very little fat or carbohydrates...so i was just wondering why you were starving your rats? and i hope this isn't a school project it's just sorta not nice. i sure wouldn't want to live off egg whites.

The control rats are being fed supplements along with the egg whites. THe egg whites are meant to be a complete source of protein. I am looking at nutrient deficienies in the rats.

then they still get no energy... egg whites + supplements is still no fat

Well I think I found the answer to my problem:
http://www.mercola.com/2002/jul/6/biotin.htm

apparently since I am using spray dried egg whites, the avidin wasn't denatured and therefore the biotin uptake was negligible. I'll give the rats Biotin tommorrow and let you guys know if there is any improvement in their health. I'll probably have to inject it into their gut which I hate to do just because I like the little critters and hate needles.

Proteins provide energy approximately 3.8 Kcal per gram

No Im not a qualified vet. I hate working with animals. If I ate them that would be a different story. I feel bad for the rats. But I have to do it for school :frown:

My experiment has obviously been blown so there really isn't any point of continuining it. I'm still going to see if supplementing them with biotin helps, but after that they get fed normal food.

exactly what were you trying to prove/disprove? what kind of proteine defficiancy were you looking into? if you were using artificle nutrients for one group, why not just feed them regular food? the point of a control is to keep things normal...eggwhites and biotin are hardly acceptable. it sounds like you trying to do two things at once.

I have two rats called cheech and chong and they are really cool. I really hate when people are doing useless experiments. What you do has been done before most likely, a useless waste with life and what your feeding them is torture. FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD!! If I had a teacher that told me to abuse animals I would smack him right in the nose.

Well if I only ate meat for a long time, I'd go through ketosis and lose a lot of my fat and lose weight. Then my kidneys would be under a lot of strain, and then awful things will happen because of vitamin deficiencies.

Yes protein can be used as an energy source, but a rat needs more than just energy. I blame the lack of vitamins and minerals.

The rats were supplemented with all the neccessary vitamins and mineraly. The eggs where just their source of protein. I gave the rats biotin, and they are running at 100% now. scampering about just looking very healthy. I was amazed at how fast the improvement was. The rats are now being fed normal food, but may be subject to other experiments which I will have nothing to do with.

I don't think ketosis is such a bad thing. Lack of carbs causes it, but the brain then can utilize EFA's instead.
