I read a lot of people's posts who love Aphex Twin. Is this just when you're tripping, or all the time. For the life of me I can't get into anything but their ambient works. I haven't listened to any of it on mushrooms or anything else yet, but what's the deal? What's so great about it?

Well, there's something to be said for "just getting it" vs "not" -- but that's not an elitist statement -- it just strikes people in a certain way, and not others.
But to explain further, for me it's a matter of being able to find patterns and texture in what seems to be chaos. If you listen closely to the Ambient stuff you'll find it's the same, in a way, as his non-ambient works -- just as if the contrast knob had been turned waaay down. He'll produce a work which seems random, but will fit and work with the "rules" of music, then another which defies the rules but shapes sound to elicit an emotional response and yet another which is meant to convey a message, even if that message is completely untranslatable. And some is just fun and freaky
But that's just me.

So what appeals to you musically is analyzing the textures and layers to ultimately find an obtuse pattern?

For Aphex Twin and similar artists, sometimes. And I think some of it is just plain fun
Aphex Twin can make me crack up (even when sober ;-)) with the feelings I soak from it. Or compare on a level to feeling the emotions from an opera in Italian (if you don't understand Italian)-- now extend it to the structure of the music itself.
Note that I'm in no way trying to convince ya -- just explaining how it works for me.

Right on. If you've had strong psychedelic experiences, it can be similar, but in a musical sense.
I'd love to hear how you feel about it -- even if you still don't connect with it.

What would you suggest to begin with, I listened the Classics album and it was ok. The songs I have downloaded I could go either way, for most of them at least.

Hm, if you like industrial music, picking up the Come to Daddy EP would be good.
Donkey Rhubarb is a kinda inbetween step from his ambient to more out-there stuff.
Seek out the Come to Daddy or Windowlicker videos to perhaps give a decent visual connection to what the music might be conveying.
I think "I Care Because You Do" makes for a decent intro to his work: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000002HIK

I first got into aphex twin through the come to daddy video, and then I just downloaded random stuff. Last summer I got the "Rchard D. James Album" I had this album playing the second I did shrooms and it was amazing. I love it sober too, it just seemed for that particular trip cuz we were all outside running around in my backyard. The music has no lyrics really and while it has some melodies they're not really drilled into the listener its perfect that way cuz it can be played over and over and never seem familiar. I also think the mix of fun and mysterious/scary sounds in it really enhance a mushroom trip. The bottom line would be that whether you dig it or not the guy is a genius and you should definitely give his stuff a strong listen.
on an unrelated note those already familiar with aphex might wanna check out a cover of come to daddy by dillinger escape plan, its crazy to hear a live band cover that song.

i say listen to drukqs track 2 on the first disk.... i have blown so many peoples minds with this track, even when there sober. even people who detest electronic music all together. they say 'damn...that is something altogether i never thought could happen to my ears'
i listen to aphex all the time...by far my favorite electronic artist (with the orb in a close second)...but seriously....drukqs ...disk 1...track 2...headphones, you'll be a changed man.
his production techniques are beyond the scope of my comprehension, and i trained at a very prestigious music school for several years and have been studying on my own for close to 10 years now.
ive only bought one new album since 1998..and that was drukqs, its that good.

I find some of his stuff simply amazing, makes my whole body feel like it is floating in the bars of music. Some of his stuff I detest, I'm reminded of a track (I think on I care because you do, but I might be wrong) with a high-pitched squeal going on in the background throughout the entire track...

kindof sick of his jungle & most jungle for that matter. but new melodies & percusive patternings are excellent...

Richard rules. Don't write him off if you've only ever heard one song or one album, his production is extremely varied.
If you lurv Aphex, then you probably dig Autechre and the rest of the Warp rooster too.
Warp has just launched an online music outlet where they sell high quality mp3's (none of that drm crap). It's called Bleep:

Btw, Bleep is superb compared to other online music outlets. You can listen to 90kbps streams (complete, not 10 seconds or something) of all the songs and albums they sell.
If you're not aquinted with Warp, then this is the place to get some nice new music. Some of my favourites on Warp are: Aphex, Autechre, Squaqrepsuher, Plaid, Prefuse 73, LFO, Nightmares On Wax, Boards Of Canada, The Black Dog, Brothomstates, Anti-Pop Consortium, Chris Clark, Danger Mouse & Jemini The Gifted, Luke Vibert, Red Snapper, Wagon Christ, etc. etc.
Enough evangelising.. just check it out

Those are all good It's strange actually, in American films and series they always use European music for clubs etc. The only US group I can think of right now in this vein is Crystal Method.
Their IDM scene is extremely small too. You've got Cex, Venetian Snares, and a few more. Guess rock and roll and gangsta hip hop will rule the US for some time still

I wish the milk-man would de-liver my milk.. Some of his harder to find stuff is awesome(like a few analog bubble bath albums) but there's no reason not to own the whole collection. Also boards of Canada, Autechre, Squarepusher, Amon Tobin, and solvent are a few favorites.

Ya, I dig Boards of Canada. The Milkman song didn't really tickle my fancy. I did listen to the second track of disc 2 of Drukqs and I don't know what to say. Angryjslice, I don't know if your friends were tripping or just humoring you, but I really can't imagine someone who doesn't even like electronic music being all stoked on it. I can see the appeal in an abstract way, but it just doesn't seem like someone would want to listen to it for musical enjoyment. I like a very wide range of music and that just seems . . . like more of an experiment than music. Sorry if I'm way off base, I'm just honestly trying to understand the obsession.

Aphex Twin is my absolute favorite now, after listening to em for only a couple of months. I only have about 60 songs, and am craving more!!! I also like autechre a lot. I wish i didn't have this fucking 56k modem to download em with though. I've been wanting to buy their cd's for the longest time, just havent found any in stores, or just haven't got around to it i guess. Peace

Yeah i love aphex twin, vordhosbn has to be one of my favs. Drukqs as a whole is probally my most fav album.
I know i got into aphex with the come to daddy EP. Songs like flim and iz-us especially caught my attention so i seeked out more of his works. And now im an idm freak. I love boards of canada and squarepusher. I actually have not tripped yet but i have been reading up on it and am really excited for my first time. I have been reading alot of terrence mckenna. But i would love to put on some aphex or boc while tripping. I know when i smoke with my friends they dont get aphex at all.
Some other artist to check out
Black moth super rainbow Joseph nothing and ofcourse Boards of canada

it was the video for "Come to Daddy"... really frightening.. But many of Aphex Twin's videos are great (and not so scary)... try downloading some and see what you think

If you want to listen to really good early AFX stuff get his Selected Ambient Works vol.1 cd/lp. It different to his later work which is very strange hardcore noise.
Some tracks which would be perfect for tripping to: (all by aphex twin)
Ageispollis polynomial c
the two above are my all time fav's

One time I took a few hits of LSD and drank alot of beer, by 6 in the morning I was blacked out and singing Windowlicker.
I also like digeridoo, curtains, autumn acid, the star wars remix, xtal... just to name a few.
If you like AFX theres a decent chance that you'd like Plastikman.
