Cyans from portland....

My friend found a nice patch of cyans that were growing right out of dirt under a pine tree. I saw a few pieces of wood but not much. We harvested a couple ounces dry off this one patch alone. Anyone else finding anything around town? I didn't get any good habitat pics but here is what I do have...

dude i dont think those are all cyans, please dont eat any til an expierenced person looks at them the one at the top to the left of the scisors seems to have a black ring at the base that would indicate a conocybe or some other deadly mushroom that i cant remeber the name of.
merry x-mas
also the ph onder a pine tree (imho) would be un-suitable for cyans

while it would be foolish and ungqualified to say they are all cyans from a picture of dozens of specimens lumped together, they definately look to by cyans from what i can see.
as long as the pickers are sure, and have taken pains to keep collections seperate untill all where sorted, i'd say it's a christmas present like no other .
happy hollidays all.

if you have indeed positivly identified these as cyans, i believe you may have the first documented case of cyans in the portland area..i have searched on and off for these in pdx over the last few years to no avail..last year i exausted an extensive websearch regarding the wavy-cap in the portland area to no avail, but haven't done much onine research this year....still, i was unable to find any proof that these grew in the pdx area, although all signs point to the fact that they should....if you have indeed determined your find to be cyans, please elaborate a bit on your find..no specifics, but maybe ne/se?..park?..golf course?..ect..pm me if you like..it seems like a strange habitat to find them in anywayz without wood chips, so i am intriged..a definate spotting of cyans in pdx would renew my hunting spirit..i feel like i have been pointlessly wandering in search of something that doesn't exist..more please..??!!

lazyvegan, P. cyanescens have been know of in Portland since 1958 and were reported in Singer and Smith's Monograph of genus Psilocybe publkished in Mycologia vol. 50: [part 2.). In fact P. cyans are known of from San Francisco to British Coloumbia. ANd you said: Quote:

They are also found on lawns with no mulch. mj See field guide at top f page opn pictures of P. cyanescens in lawns. mj

These were found in SE portland under a tree, growing right next to a sidewalk near an intersection where alot of cars pass by. I too have had a very difficult time trying to find cyans in portland, but I know others that have found them in town. My question is why would they be so much more likely to be growing in Seattle? The weather conditions are not that much different.

I think that it has to do with the type of mulch that is commonly used in the area. From what I have observed, and from my experience in the landscaping trade, it seems that the mulch most commonly used in the portland area is Douglas fir bark. From what I understand, alder mulch is more commonly used in the puget sound area.

I believe Nicechrisman is probably correct on this. Check out Joshua's post from earlier in December, he lives very roughly in your area and pulled a huge haul. They don't seem to be too shy once you find the right spot, so i don't think being in Seattle has anything to do with it other than the good fortune of having lots of woodchips.

I'm starting hunting next season. I've only cultivated indoors. I think that cyans are a pretty good specie to start with because of their distinguished look. Any suggestions on areas to hunt/places to avoid. Washington Park, Rose Garden too hot. Look-alikes, any info greatly appreciated!

so i've heard washington park is a decent place to hunt specially where the roses are. never been there though, so i can't give true advice on it...i gave up looking for cyan's here in portland...they only use coniferous wood here as mulching. never once have i'm seen a hardwood mulch...and trust me i've looked... when i pick i typicaly head up to astoria, it's only likea 90 minute drive and the trip is most deffinately worth it

What's the heat like in Astoria. They gotta know what's goin on. Do you just act like a tourist or a photographer? It's a shame it's so hard to find shrooms in urban Portland. Are there any other species of interest in the city limits? Hmmmm.... ---------- I just logged in and suddenly I'm a member? I wonder what member.

they don't care that's all there is to it...there's coast line all up and down washington and oregon...i think ilwako long beach in WA is something like 30 miles long. st stevens state park in hammond, when your buy the beach, spans farther than you can see in both directions. all st stevens is a dunegrass and sand. i always went during weekdays, and earlier than later...every once in a while you see a plane over head, and you think you're going to get busted, but i never have...i think it's places like ft canby that pickers get busted the most...everyone and their gramma seems to pick there. i think that stunzi, cyananfibrilosa, and of course your cyanscens. i still say cyans are hard to find in portland. every mulching is a mix of coniferous wood and bark. there were like a whole two posting of people finding cyans in the portland area, but look how many were posted from the seattle area.
oh, and ft stevens they don't have a "don't pick the mushrooms" sign...which is prolly good...ft canby does, and look what happened there. seasons done with anyway....oh well.

We need to start a petition to promote the use of alder chips instead of fir in the city of Portland. Maybe fir is bad for the environment or spotted owls or something?
