bottom casing layer, do you do it?
    #2253304 - 01/19/04 03:53 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

well i am about to start my first casing venture, and i was just wondering if you guys do a bottom casing layer or not. i've read through a bunch of the grow logs and i never hear anyone mentioning it and i'm not sure if thats b/c no one does it, or because it's just understood that you are supposed to do that.

i read the pro's and cons on the shroomery FAQ's and I was just wondering what you guy's thoughts were.

[edit] and if do end up doing the bottom casing layer, do i want to do just pure verm or would the jiffy mix i already have be alright?

any info would be greatly appreciated.

I just did 20 mins ago. Top, bottom, and all the sides. It could potentially be a harbour for contams but i haven't had a problem with it ever. Just make sure the casing material isn't too wet.

i always use a bottom casing layer...it's just typically verm, nothing else...it's dampned but not soak...the only reason i use it, is incase their is too much moisture in the casing, it has somewhere to go. with mistings the casings and suck, water can run down the sides of the terrarium...if the casing doesn't absorb it, then it just sits in a puddle of water at the bottom of the casing. the verm helps soak this up and redestribute it evenly...no puddles of water is a good thing.

If your casing with BRF cakes, you should alway use a botton layer! If your using poo of straw you only need a top layer!
