Grow Advice

Hey all,
My neighboor has been reading/studying all the FAQ's and Message Boards on the Shroomery for quite awhile and they think they have a pretty good grasp on the techniques necessary to be a successfull grower. The question they have is, should they start with cakes just to make sure everything goes smoothly, or would trying to case for the first grow be a bad idea? Any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks for all of your awesome advice comments. My neighboor appreciates it!

Depends what you feel comfy with. If you have done your homework and want to start with casings, go for it.
To get your feet wet and a relatively good success rate, I would do PF cakes and see how you like it.
Either way you go you will come away with some good learning experiences and probably some great shrooms!
Good luck

If you study well, you can be succesfull at everything. I recently teached someone how to grow and he decided to go with grain spawn and straw at first try and the motherfucker is successful !

My neighboor wants decent potentcy from the shrooms they grow, is there a significant difference between BRF cakes and say WBF casings? From what I've read it sounds like it makes a huge difference.

Some people swear there's a difference while some other don't think it's true. You shouldn't be concerned by this right now.
What you could do is following the PF-Tek, but instead of using Brown Rice Flour, grind some wild bird seeds in a coffee grinder and use Wild Bird Seeds Flour. It will be as easy as the regular PF-Tek but you'll have the satisfaction of growing on WBS.

WBS?
Huge difference - nah.
Flip a coin if you are undecided.

In the arguement over potency of BRF vs WBS/Other grains I say there is absolutely a difference. From my experience, you trip harder and longer off grain grown mushrooms than PF tek mushrooms.

On my very first grow I didn't have a pressure cooker and tried both BRF cakes as well as BRF casings. Needless to say I've not touched cakes since. Wild bird seeds the way to go either spawned to straw, poo, a mixture of the two or just plain seed spawn cased.

Well if millet is so potent why not sub it 1:1 for BRF in pf cakes? Organic millet flour is usually right next to BRF on the shelf! hell I get mine at winn dixie!

Cakes suck compared to casing in my experience. I live in the UK and have never seen Millet flour or heard of Winn Dixie. How the fuck can you shake millet flour anyway ???

Spawning to straw/poo does sound like the way to go, but they are trying to somewhat keep it simple at first...I'm thinking maybe just casing WBS with the 50-50+ Tek. They got Treasure Coast, PC Equadore, PC Australia, and PC India syringes from Hawkseye.

I have a method for making VERY shakeable millet flour/verm cakes that colonize in a about a week, and are crumbled and cased with coco coir. works great. just cos you don't know how to do something doesn't mean that it can't be done!:p

Good for you. I think I'll stick to agar & millet

As would I, but since my PC broke flour has been my only option!

I cased PF cakes my first time. I got the spores from a friend who went the cake route. I innoculated 3 weeks after him and had over 1/2 oz. of fruit before he saw his first pin. He gave up on the cakes and cased them. They did wonderfully after that. Personally, I think the problem is that of constant humidity when doing cakes. Casings don't need as much attention. Use some perlite and mist every day, fan twice a day and you should get a 1st flush w/in 2 weeks. He had a humidifier, light bulb, Hepa unit (used for fanning), and a digital thermometor/humidistat. I had a rubbermaid, perlite, 4 small disposable tupperwares, suran wrap and a fish tank strip therm. You do the math.

heh, ditto agar +millet = key ! so easy to see what's going on and culture a substrain if you find something worth growing on it's own.

it depends on what you're growing for, what styles you use, and how old you are.
i say "how old you are" because i find a lot of teenagers trying to grow and 9 times out of 10 they're also saying "i need it to be hidden, out of view".
as a starting point, i suggest many people start off with the PF Tek, mainly because you can either birth the straight cakes or you can case them. either way, you're gonna be trippin in about a month and a half
-------------------- -m. I dont even grow these things... I just post for this guy that knows a guy, who's sisters boyfriend dumped about 2 months ago.
