Well, here I am posting from my new Athlon 64 3200+ system, this thing is fast. Took 45 minutes for gentoo install stage 1, 45 minutes for stage 2, ~30 to compile xfree, and ive actually remembered to run time for the kde 3.2b2 compile. Stage 1 on a Athlon 1700+ took 2 hours, stage 2 usually took about 3, xfree 2 hours, and kde took ~18hours, i expect it to be done by morning. the CPU booted into my existing 32-bit install with no problem before i wiped the hard drive.

i can't believe you sprung for something that cost 700+$ when there's barely any 64bit apps out there yet...even though you're system is a 64 bit system now, all your apps are still running at 32 bits...athalon shoulda waited to release this.

Thats a smoking system!
While I do tend to agree with llamaboy about waiting a bit, mostly due to the price, but  if you've got the cash to spare,  go for it!

try $299,

>when there's barely any 64bit apps out there yet

Every app on my current system is running nativly in 64-bit mode... it helps to not run windows...

heh, so you got that shitty athalon one? not the FX series eh....cuz i know they're still charging retailers close to 650$/one/per hundred...why not spring for another one, then you could be running dual....you could have more RAM than most people have hard drive room. as for linux i am a linux fan, i run it on another computer. but i don't program and it frustrated me with the lack of driver support out there for linux. so what exactly do you do with a speed like that? i mean you have to be running some killer apps....you playing with ACAD for linux or something? doing some GC modeling. it can't be for just gaming, because a 2.6ghz P4 will handle anything out there as long as you have a gfx card...so what do you do with it? what provoked you to buy it?

Because I could. Simple as that, why do I need to justify my purchase to you? Do you ask someone who's purchased a BMW why they didn't just get the kia, givin the speed limits they will both get you from point A to point B in the same amount of time.

The reason I went with the 3200 was because its price/performance ratio is dead center, I was considering the 3000 but the half-meg cache turned me away I almost got the 3400 because it performs roughly the same as the FX for quite a bit less, but then I would have had to choose to not get a new video card or new u160 SCSI hard drive. With the 3200 I get can still get both.

Also, its no ones business here what I need the power of this system for, I have one in my possesion so I thought I would provide some feedback for anyone interested in the x86_64 arch and to give them knowledge that there is someone out there with the technology available if they ever had any questions.

And now I'm asking you (llamaboy) to not post into this thread again, your input/feedback has been noted and saved to /dev/null. It is also no longer wanted in this thread.

the only reason i give you a hard time is because i can't stand AMD. I work for the leading microprosser company...buying a the cheapest of the cheap isn't the way to go. you don't ask a person why they bought a BMW because if they have one, you figure they can afford it. when someone buys a 300$ chip, when there are better performing ones out there, you ask them what they even needed it for, granted the fx is in the 750$ range, and the itanium2 is in the 1500$ range. but they're also far better chips. if one needed such power, i would think that they would srping for a better quality chip. and just because you run a 64 bit o/s...doesn't mean the apps are. one cool thing about the AMD though, it has the capability to run at 32 bits, whereas the itanium doesn't. sorry if i hurt your feelings or something. but 64 bit chips are pointless for home use at this point...if there was a damand for home use...more people would have bought xenon and itaniums. these 64 bit chips have been around for a couple years. sun runs their own 64 bit chips...maybe AMD brought the price into the consumer level. however, why drive a honda when you can drive a BMW.

Windows DOES have a 64-bit version and there are also many 64-bit apps out there.

Windows has a free download right now for Windows Server 2003 for amd64; I havn't gotten a chance to try it out yet. I'm too cheap to buy some more blank cds.

yeah, i know they have a 64 bit o/s...they have winxp in a 64 bit version, and also 2003 server comes in a bit version as well...there are apps out there for them...but i don't think anything windows oriented is really 64 bit...like ms office...but i could be dead wrong on that. dun really know. most people running 64bit aren't running off of windows, they usually run a sun box with cde

llamaboy: have you totally brainwashed by intel?
>i can't believe you sprung for something that cost 700+$

first its too expensive

>I work for the leading microprosser company...buying a the cheapest of the cheap isn't the way to go

then its too cheap

>if there was a damand for home use...more people would have bought xenon and itaniums.

Then its pointless and doomed to failure because nobody bought $1200 Itaniums or a server board and dual Xeons for their desktop.

I'm curious how you came by this bias...I admit i have one towards AMD, as they tend to be the most CPU/$ and are the underdog to boot.

Posting fom a athlon64 3000+ that I picked up for a little over 200$, and I couldn't be happier. I too plan to install gentoo when I get some time to spare. Even running 32bit XP this thing smokes any cpu intel puts out in the same price range (and even ones that are considerably more expensive).

KthxBye: no need to feed the trolls

ddaedalus:  nice isnt it =D  For the gentoo install, dont use bootstrap-26.sh yet.  Id also stick with the amd64 live cd that was put out in december the one from jan. is pushing even further from devfs to the sysfs and breaks quite a bit of stuff currently =\  Although I'm sure theres a way to make it work correctly, there dosnt seem to be much documentation (from gentoo) on the switch to sysfs since gentoo dosnt play very nice without the devfs yet.  I think full amd64 and kernel 2.6 support will be available in the upcomming gentoo 2004 release.

Thanks for the advice. I always make sure to upgrade my gentoo behind the rest of the pack (just compiled 2.6 for the first time last week). That way most of kinks are ironed out for me. I am not really adept enough to fix things for myself, yet...still have a lot to learn.

I also have a 3200 athlon 64 at work with 64 bit Linux installed and a new 64 bit compiler (C compiler - cgi converter). We used to compile our application (which runs under linux and Apache server) in some dual P4 xeon at 2400 in 32 bit, a nice IBM e-series or x-series i think. Well the new athlon 64 compiles and creates the whole set of binaries in almost half of the time the intel system used to do.
Shitty ? Yeah, maybe only the pants of the "leading microprosser company". Independently of AMD situation, this is the fastest processor and i bet you can't find a better performance:price ratio on the market.
