hum. don't really know where to post this..
let's say i have an electric guitar with a neat paint job, but fear that it will look really crappy after lots of use.
i see little hairline scratches in many places at the right angles- but these could wear it down after a while.. Is there some sort of polish that can cover these? how should I best handle them? I may be a bit too protective, is that the case? Hrm.. Cars have polishes that remove such scratches, don't they?

yes, cars do have polishes that remove scratches, but I'm pretty sure that is a different scenario. There is some guitar polish and (more importantly) some fretboard lem oil that is very worth the time and effort. I think the one I've used is Dr. longfellow or something. If you keep the fretboard in great shape, your guitar will last a long time. There's no such thing as too protective--say you got a '64 les paul gold top and was not overly protective, you'd be missing out on TENS of THOUSANDS of dollars today. But even still, you should take care of your instrument. As for the scratches on the body, you can't really buff them out to my knowledge, but to avoid any further damage just don't knock it into stuff, and always keep it in a hardshell case when not playing. It's pretty tough to keep it scratchless, but you can at least keep it in good shape. what kind of axe is it?

they're reallllly thin scratches though.. hrmm.. it annoys me that i cant really get rid of them.. ( wait a second, aren't there furniture scratch removal things too? bah.. maybe still different.. i dont want to risk destroying the paint.. ) ill def look into the fretboard oil though

I'm not too sure man, I've had a shit guitar for a long time so I never really worried about repairing it. Of course, that doesn't mean I don't take care of my gear, I recently bought a Gibson and have handled it like a new born.
You could get a pick gaurd if you don't already have one, but as far as I know if its scratched, its scratched.

Depending on the finish of your guitar I think you could use lemon oil all over it for a good cleaning..I'm not sure if it would help much with the scratches, though.. However, I have heard some good things about this stuff

A polish is definitely a solution, but it greatly depends on the thickness of the paint layers. Get a very mild polish (swirl and scratch remover) and don't rub too hard. I'd try it on a less visible area first though.

sure, you can buff out scratches if it is a laquer finish. just get a polishing pad that fits on a drill and get a good fine polishing compound.
you might also want to get the swirl remover, unless you have a light touch. just be sure to keep an eye on the thickness of the laquer finish. you dont want to burn through the color.
