Good evening, friends.
The three images below are of one of the P mexicana βRancho Agostoβ cakes I have growing on coarse ground rye flour. This is the only cake to reach 100% colonization (about two weeks ago). Are these the beginnings of sclerotia I see in the bottom of the jar?

Nice! Thank you guys. Since I have another MS culture in a jar on WBS right now that I will probably allow to go for stones, the question becomes βhow to fruit this one?β
Even after shrinking a bit, it still seems too wide at the bottom to birth smoothly from the tapered jar in one piece. So do you think I should bust it up and S2B in a small container with some CV? Or would yβall suggest that I remove the dry verm layer, then case and top fruit straight from the jar?
I guess Iβm leaning towards top fruit, seems like disturbing the mycelium less would be beneficial. But I donβt know if Iβm missing an advantage to doing it the other way?
To clarify, Iβm more interested in a few fruit to clone than in stones with this particular cake. Iβm just glad that stones mean Iβve definitely grown the right fungus!!
Thanks again, all

Either would work. Disturbing the sub shouldnβt affect fruiting. Iβve crumbled old ass sub and fruited fine. Dare I say, throw some sand in the casing?

So I remember ppl doing this 10-20 years ago for mex casing. Is it still a thing? I dont have hydrated lime atm so I've been using straight verm. Until I stop being cheap and buy some. Does sand have any benefit in mex casing?

They can fruit fine without it but I believe it is super beneficial. Hereβs a test I ran a few years back. Tampanensis Sand Casing Project

Mycoloado, now there's a name I haven't heard ...
I did some follow up experiments with similar results.

I use sand in my casing, 1:1:1 peat:verm:sand, with 10% CaCO3 by weight, and it's worked great for my tamps and mexicanas
