Hello all, I have got 20 jars of stones going and I am wondering if they need light. I use 12/12 for cube myc and it works really well. Do the stones need light while colonizing/developing?

I have my stone jars in my bedroom closet. I keep the doors open so they get very little light, but considering the stones grow underground, I think they'll do fine in the dark
Anyway, mini mono is fully colonized. I just gave it a light misting, and I'm going to give it another week to consolidate and beef up the stones before casing.

That's not too bad...I have a galindoi fruiting project going and its growing big stones through the casing, but no fruit yet. It's been three or four weeks since casing. I was thinking temps might have something to do with it, my room is about the same temps as yours though.

So I have a mexicana quart jar that I started october 14th. I noticed today that it has started to develop some green mold near the top.
Any advice beyond cut out the mold and save what stones I can? Some of them look decently big. I doubt the stones will be any good for inoculating anything, but for eating they should be fine.
Or Maybe I'll let them duke it out in there. Had a cubensis grass seed petri win what seemed like an impossible battle against some green mold recently.

Sounds like you need to check your filters.
You use silicone & SFD?

Yeah I use SFD's. I had actually added a casing in open air after it had been 100% colonized for a while.
I thought it was cool after things were colonized.

Then your casing was either under or over pasteurized. More than likely over pasteurized...
Any pictures of the jar during colonization?

Sorry no pics, though it did look awfully gray. I was actually planning on throwing it out but when I saw stones forming decided to keep it. Can't remember if I even pasteurized the casing. I had found an RR quote recently that claimed unpasteurized casings works. RR even said it works better than pasteurized casing
Also I used biochar casing. Its essentially charcoal inoculated with compost microbes. (a fairly stupid decision looking back. I mean, adding unknown foreign microbes to casing, fucking genius ) Though using biochar free of microbes may be interesting..
But, just to clarify, I wasn't posting in hopes of finding out why it contammed. I had been asking for advice as to where to go from here. The mold is coming in at the top of the jar so getting some clean myc out of their probably isn't an option.

Those tamps are beautiful, seeing other tamps pics of yours awhile back inspired me to start some up. I just did some from rehydrated stones cloned to agar. Only took 1 transfer to get them clean after using the method cronicr used hydrating in diluted peroxide water.
The stones were like 3 years old, from my very first tamp grow. I was surprised I saw myc in under a week on agar, although I did hydrate them for 1.5weeks.
Thanks for the compliment Eat, I just love looking at these little guys. They are maturing slower than usual but I'm sure it's Just MS genetics. I can see through one container and it's all white and the other I flipped out of the container to check, it was all good too.
Here's some pics from this afternoon. I know bluing isn't scientifically associated with potency, but damn do these get a beautiful baby blue when I brush them. They turn very dark blue/black about 20mins after picking. Never had ATL blue as much as my panaeolus.
I was force to remove some small stones from the middle of the white cool whip container that were poking out preventing pinning. I like stones, but I love the fruits!

Well I'm getting a little impatient. My ATL7 mini mono has been fully colonized for 2 days. I'm casing my APE tubs tomorrow so I'll go ahead and case the galindoi tomorrow as well.
Also starting a new project in a bit. I found an old pint of tampanensis on millet that I had forgotten about. I put some grains on agar and they're recovering fine, so I'm going to dump the rest of the jar into a 4 quart spawn bag and forget about it for a few months.

got some nice and clean cultures of both tampensis and mexicana
Gonna put some on slants and take the remaining plates to grains. All I have right now is grass seed and WBS but I figure that's fine for G2G masters.
Or maybe I should skip the master grains and just make some liquid innoculant with a plate...
don't let the thread die

What's an average stone yield for you guys like for quart jars? I weighed a batch of stones from a clone I took and I got 176 grams. Sounded a bit high, so what do y'all usually get?
