tree frog said: For bulk sclerotia I like to do 1:4 spawn:coir and lay all my spawn on top. I then cover my spawn with casing if I plan to fruit, or 70% shade cloth if I don't. The coir gives the spawn lots of extra water for making stones. Laying the spawn on top ensures that all your stones are between the nutritious and non-nutrious layers (coir - spawn - casing/shade cloth, the stones will be the dashes)*. Shade cloth makes stones require less cleaning than casing, but I haven't gotten them to fruit through it (though I have made bulk stones using shade cloth and gone on to case and fruit later).
Half-gallon jars produce plenty of stones too. And you can still spawn them to coir after harvesting the larger stones and the smaller ones will plump up in a couple of weeks.
All my bags I ended up spawning to bulk. I didn't think the yield they were putting up was great.
* If you mix your spawn and sub you'll end up with stones all over. Often the sides, bottoms, and in the casing as they prefer the interface of nutrient/non-nutrient for making stones. But, as coir is not nutritious, they'll potentially put stones all over which doesn't make for necessarily bigger stones/yield and definitely makes harvesting/cleaning more time consuming.
Shade cloth? As in window shade? Sorry if this is a stupid question but don't people usually use bubble wrap? Also you mention the half gallon jars. I found a couple of them in someone's trash that looked brand new.(Yes I pick trash for this hobby lol) possibly a contam risk but it's hard to pass up free. I just wash it really good and pressure cooked it. But anyway I was considering using them for stones. I wonder if they'd produce more Stones in the jar if I made them like 50/50 grain to coco coir? Just a thought I had after reading your post. Maybe I'll try it. Btw for people on a budget, you'd be surprised the amount of stuff people throw away that can be used for this hobby. I live in an area where it's kind of expensive to live with triple deckers everywhere with apartments. People don't have room to store things they're not using and storage units are ridiculous imo. So people just throw shit out to avoid clutter in their homes. Also big construction sites are good just ask if you and raid their dumpster if it's closer to the street and looks safe to do. Usually they'd be happy to free up dumpster space. Was on a job last year where I'd say every week we would throw out enough wood to build a small house. It's not worth it for them to pick threw cuts so they just grab new pieces of wood through the cuts away. Sometimes they just throw away shit because it's taking up floor space. And don't buy hardware either. They throw away hardware like peanut shells. As a laborer I was able to walk around all day looking very busy while filling my pockets with screws and things and making car runs with lumber. Was able to build my greenhouse for free basically besides the fan and ultrasonic. I was inspired by the song One piece at a time by Johnny Cash if you know it Sorry for the tangent, just wanted to share that, especially in a world where recycling is a virtue.

Yeah the tough part is deciding if I think I would ever use whatever it is I find. Then again I put a lot of stuff back out on the street and often people will come take it before trash day. Especially if it's clean and looks good still. Imo our society throws out way too much stuff I would say in an effort to save some time for the most part. It's easier to throw stuff away and let someone else deal with it. But I think we should try to learn from mushrooms and just take our time with shit. Whats the rush? Especially when taking our time with things will probably give us more time in the long run before rendering the planet uninhabitable. Not to mention all the species of plants and animals we are allowing to become extinct and lost forever.

Was just wondering if this is sterilized in the container and inoculated with lc? Or did you spawn from grains and pasteurized? I might try a few sterilized substrates but I've never done it before so just trying to get some ideas on different containers.
