Sclerotia is nice because you don't have to do anything to grow it
The popcorn was a good idea -- seems like a good substrate for growing stones.

I think it hasn't been done before. At least not here.

rock on, always nice to be involved with something 'new'. hopefully more will now be inclined to give mexA a try. with popcorn it's as easy as falling down.

I don't like rye grass seed so I might try this. The yields look very good too.

we were thinking yields could be improved by using higher surface area to volume ratio such as smaller pint or half pints, or bags w/flatcakes inside. this should help trigger more sclerotia formation as a direct correlation was observed between sclerotia formation and being located at the substrate/non-substrate interface.

Ryegrassseed yields the same weight on almost half the substrate.

that certainly may well be true, but i daresay it'd be wise to be cautious about drawing conclusions about pcorn's yield potential from one very preliminary experiment. now that the concept has be proven, more experiments are needed to pin down the real yield potential using improved techniques.

I have grown the SW strain on many different typs of grain. These include millit, poping corn, rye grass seed, millit, wheat, mixed bird seed and various combinations. the popcorn did well in terms of yeild but the percentage of tiny stones was huge. Each grain of corn was encrusted in sclerotia which had formed in the gaps between grains. there were some biguns to but none were huge. this happened to a lesser extent with the other grains used. All in all rye grass seed was the winner only large stones with an average weight of aprox. 10-15g and the biggest being over 60g. The rye grass seed yeilded 175g per 2litre jar with 1.5 litres of pre cooked RGS per jar in 8-10 weeks. I also find that the RGS. is easyer to sepparate from the stones with very few seeds in the stone. I would not use popcorn again after using rye grass seed. Hope this helps. ;-) Ignor my spelling!

just about. saok it till it about 8-12 hours then drian and laod into jars. if it isn't absorbing enough water and is comming out on the dry side, try adding a little water just before sterilization.
the main prob i've had wth rye grass seed is taht it ends up rather thick, and shaking dosen't help.

rye grass is a common grass for lawns. it's seeds are like commercial food/feed rye only smaller. it is the most common substrate for the cultivation of P. mexicana sclerotia. you can buy it at most departments stores with lawn/garden centers and at nurseries.

Sold as annual rye grass seed, try a lawn/ turf suppliers. Prep. 25 mins in boilind water and strain very well. to stop it sticking together we shake it as soon as it comes out of the PC. and once when it is slightly cooler ;-)

You can add a pinch of gypsum to the grass seed to help stop it from sticking together. You can get it at a brewer's shop.

Quick question. After colonization has run through most of the jar, can you do grain to grain transfers??? How long till completly finished making the stones, from the time you innoculate?
