Mars Volta live at Galatos
    #2251822 - 01/19/04 12:49 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

Well, finally the date I was waiting months for came around, and I saw Mars Volta live. At first it appeared they would just be playing the Big Day Out festival, but thankfully they did their own show the night before in a nice small venue (the stage was tiny, and barely fit the whole band onto it), about 400-500 people.
What can I say, the show was awesome. Very energetic permformance - Cedric was jumping all over the place; obviously the small stage didn't stop him from acting like Robert Plant on speed. The set list was basically the entire album (the exact order, I'm not really sure, but to my memory it was roughly in the right order...they opened with the first song on Deloused, and closed with the last). Good to see my newest favourite band so soon, and it felt really weird seeing them (probably cause I've seen fuck all pictures of them).
If they're heading to your town, make sure you check them out. They'll be in Australia at the moment, so you Aussies, go fucking see Mars Volta.

I am told it is "The Mars Volta" - 3 words.

I heard this group for the first time last weekend. If I had money I would buy an album. Unfortunatly, I refuse to d/l music off the net (even from those newfangled "legit" $.99 sites) so I probably wont hear anything more from this fine band for a while.

It is The Mars Volta, but sometimes I don't even bother putting in "The". You should definitely work on getting the album - it sounds a lot better when it's played through from the first track right to the last. Add some  :spliff: and it's just amazing.

I can't enjoy music when other ppl are around. I dont know, when I am with ppl I want our vibes to reverb off each other. Music is so deeply personal and touches me in crazy ways unimaginable, I have yet to find anyone/that someone who can make me enjoy music with them.

The only exception to that is Miss Mary Jane. When we are together, music can mean so much. When we are apart it feels like I am away from my lover.

I think they be comin to Vancouver in a few months. I can''t wait.
Though I have to admit, I didn't really like them at first. Took a quite a few listens before I actually started to appreciate their music.

Yeah, the album takes time to fully grow on you. The first time I heard it, I wasn't THAT impressed. These days I'm just awestruck.
Most of my favourite albums took a longer time to grow on me - and they're the albums I still love in 3 years time.

I'll have to give these guys a good listen... I'm always willing to listen to the suggestions of a fellow Tool fan.

How many albums do they have... and which do you recommend?

They've only released one album, called De-loused in the Comatorium. I love Tool, but I have to say that The Mars Volta's musicianship goes even farther and to even greater heights than Tool's. Flea plays the bass on De-Loused in the Comatorium, their drummer is absolutely INCREDIBLE, and the guitarist and singer are on another sonic-level that we humans can't even comprehend.

Definitely pick this album up! You won't regret it!

though that is their only complete album, everybody should pick up their EP, Tremulant

it's a must buy, and i like it better than deloused for only being 3 songs long

OMG. I got De-loused and have been listening to it constantly for a week. It's such deep music, and seems to touch on so many influences. I will definitely have to add them to my list of favorite bands, which currently consists of:

Tool
Radiohead
Queens of the Stone Age
The White Stripes

I heard they might be touring with APC, and I have floor tix to see APC in Auburn Hills, MI. That would be the most amazing concert ever!

Someone mentioned At the Drive In earlier, and I just downloaded a couple of songs to see what Mars Volta sounds like, and they sound really similar to ATDI. I remember ATDI broke up a few years ago, so did the singer go to Mars Volta?

Yes. The singer and guitarist from ATDI started the Mars Volta, while the others formed a band called Sparta.

Yeah.... Omar and Cedric weren't totally musically satisfied with At The Drive In... they wanted something more progressive and deep, so they did Mars! What a great choice!
