that when you die you automatically lose a certain number of grams. this weight is supposed to be your soul...anybody know where this belief originated or if there is any evidence of it?

Somebody just mentioned this in another thread. Snopes has an article on it:

A person does loose weight the instant after they die. But the wieght lost varies greatly from one person to the next depending on how much air was occuping the lungs before death. The last breathe a person takes will yield the amont of wieght lost when a person dies and their diaphragm relaxes. If a survey was formed to some how meaure such a morbid statistic, the results wouldn't favor the 21 grams theory.

The air in our lungs actually affects the weight of our body? On land of course, not in water..

For some reason I thought air had no effect on our weight, something to do with it being all around us..? I dunno.  If it does, we would weigh more in a low-pressure room?

"MacDougall's results were flawed because the methodology used to harvest them was suspect, the sample size far too small, and the ability to measure changes in weight imprecise. For this reason, credence should not be given to the idea his experiments proved something, let alone that they measured the weight of the soul as 21 grams. His postulations on this topic are a curiousity, but nothing more."
