Since when has that ever stopped anybody. If anything it is only the "mentally stable" ones who can make the wise choice not to have kids. That's just a fact of life.

The so-called "mentally ill" make life interesting. Hemmingway, Burroughs, Van Gogh, and Edgar Allen Poe were all mentally ill. All of them with the fervor of the creative spirit that accompanies traditional mental illness.

Doesn't mean they should be having kids. Pretty sure almost all of Hemingway's descendants offed themselves. I'm gonna try and never have kids so I don't bring people as fucked in the head as I am into this world.

Hemingway's children were for the most part, successful. His youngest son was a physician and lived a long life, until his 70's or 80's I believe.
I read Hemingway's biography written by one of his children. They had interesting and funny stories about him. He would take them sailing while completely wasted drunk, and throw live grenades at turtles. Pretty sure that's where he got the idea for the Old Man and the Sea story from. From being a crazy person and an alcoholic spending all his time out alone on the ocean.

I don't remember the title, it was one of my ex's books that I was reading while he was sleeping. I'm not one of those people that remembers song or movie titles real well. It was written by one of his sons, either Gregory or Patrick.
Holy shit, while trying to search for the book, I uncovered some interesting information, apparently his son became a transsexual named Gloria? http://knowledgenuts.com/2013/12/05/ernest-hemingways-son-became-a-transsexual-named-gloria/
While trying to find the book, I found this. Go to page 419, they talk about how the sons' memory of going on the U-boat and their father throwing hand grenades at turtles and shooting flying fish with a .22: https://books.google.com/books?id=K18jAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA419&lpg=PA419&dq=gregory+hemingway+turtle+grenade&source=bl&ots=Rrep-D_6gF&sig=X3QzjcUMW_sPpsGmLSEsFFlvxRY&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CCQQ6AEwAWoVChMIoJW3xbeLyQIVDMFjCh21GgUR#v=onepage&q=gregory%20hemingway%20turtle%20grenade&f=false

Sounds like kind of an asshole, but I guess so was Burroughs shooting his wife in the head and all, and Van Gogh traumatizing women by sending them body parts, and I'm sure Poe did some fucked up things as well, but nothing I can think of other than being a melodramatic and hopeless addict. (edit- oh yeah he married his 13 year old cousin, didn't he?)

Van Gogh was a notorious asshole. He was notorious for abusing women and children. He was sexually exploitative and an abuser.

HAHA thanks for that. Hemingway is one of my favorite authors I had to read for school so learning stuff like that about him is amusing.

I think you're smart enough and self aware enough to make a sound decision if you ever were in a position of having kids, whatever that would be. Honestly I think you'd realize the immensity of the situation and feel the weight, so to speak, and having a kid might kick your ass a little bit and put you in gear to raise that thing well. Ya, you might be the crazy mom, but I feel like you're the type of person that when you put your mind to a job, can do that job and more, and I feel like motherhood wouldn't be an exception.
I'm kind of the same way where the idea of me having kids is :
1. ew. 2. scary. 3. How the fuck would they turn out?
Childbirth, and babies freak me out, but little kids are so awesome. I was always the baby, even when it came to the age of the kids I grew up with, always, so I was awkward around kids for the longest time. After I stopped thinking about it so much, kids are just fucking awesome and a lot of fun, but I really don't know if I want any of my own.
My brother is getting married in a little over a month, his fiancee wants 3 kids, and they're apparently gonna start trying for one very soon. I'm gonna have so much fun with that kiddo, and I'm excited for it, but the thought of me actually giving birth to a child skeeves me out hardcore.
