Location Malta (Mediterranean region) Date: 09 November 2015
Habitat: Accumulation of woody debris (stickys/twigs) in axils of a palm tree.
Gills: Adnate, pale brown
Stem: 5cm long, 3-4mm wide, white with some tan hues, smooth with flocks of pruinosity,
Cap: 3cm wide, Caramel-yellow centre, fading to a pale grayish brown and ending with a dull brown edge, applanate with a conspicuous umbo, slightly deliquescent, hygrophanous (I think), semi-translucent (Myecena?) with streaks of white pruinosity.
Spore print color: Chocolate brown
Bruising: Nil
Other information: Clamp junctions present, basidia with sterigmata could not be observed, but likely the numerous cheilocystidia-like structures are in fact basisia (See images).
Spores dark brown with a thick hyaline(?) wall and a conspicuous apical germ. pore
I was thinking if this belongs to Mycena sp.??

Seriously? With a brown spore print?
This is a Psathyrella (or maybe Kauffmania) sp.
Useful key: http://www.vielepilze.de/selten/psat/key/ekey.pdf

Do all Mycena have a white spore print? Good to know (thought of exceptions in this large genus). I give the key a try...
Many thanks

More images of the cystidia. Should I also consider conocybe?

Yes, without exception.

No. There is not one visible feature matching Conocybe.
If you can't key it out, try getting it sequenced. Might be an undescribed species.
Many species in Psathyrellaceae are complex and difficult to identify.

Psathyrella.
Get me the spore size and label your cystidia images (Are they cheilocystidia?) and check if pleurocystidia is present or not on the gill face.

Dear all and esp. Byrian
I placed this as Psathyrella bivelata, a mediterranean species.
Spore length: range 8.3 - 10.1 µm Spore length: mean 9.1 µm Spore width: range 4.4 - 6 µm Spore width: mean 5.3 µm Spore Q factor: range 1.6 - 1.9 Spore Q factor: mean 1.7 Spore shape Elliptical Amyloid reaction absent or very weak Spore surface Smooth Apiculum Absent Germinal pore Conspicuous, terminal/apical Spores appears to have a broad hyaline wall
Pleurocystidia not sure if present or not since the gills were 'dissolving out' and couldn't dissect properly but the entire gill was mounted.
At any rate, cheilocystidia present and abundant: Cheilocystidia (gill edges) Abundant Cheilocystidium ornamentation Cheilocystidium length: range 35 - 47.5 µm Cheilocystidium length: mean 41 µm Cheilocystidium width: range 9.5 - 11.25 µm Cheilocystidium width: mean 10.15 µm
