Oats or WBS?

Hey all, it's been awhile.. Hope everyone has been having fun and being safe
I'm getting back into this again, and expand my collection of prints. So I thought I'd ask... should I just stick with what I know or expand my knowledge and try oats for my monotub experiment? I'm not looking to create a debate on which is better, there's already a ton of threads on the subject.
So, WBS or oats? Thanks all
If it makes any difference, I pretty much follow Frank's teks.

Are you starting from MS?
I would do both. I just started again, and bought bags of each.

Oats. Easier, more forgiving, generally cheaper.
Less mess in the kitchen too!

I'm with tether. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Oats are easier to prep, but they're a big grain which will mix into far less inoculation points when you spawn it

It really doesn't make much difference what grain you use. I've used lots of different grains. The end results are always pretty much the same. I mainly use oats because they are cheep, easy to prep and their husks keep them from sticking even if you completely fuck up your prep. They don't have the inoculation points of WBS but you can fix that by adding a little wheat bran during your prep.

I still prefer WBS, after having tried rye and oats. The number of inoculation points is a huge plus, especially when dropping a tiny wedge of agar in your jars. The mycelium is able to colonize the center of the grain much quicker and spreads fast. With oats, I notice the growth seems labored, and it doesn't help that my oats tend to dry out soo quickly.
So overall, I've had the best success with WBS. That milo and millet combo is just too good to pass up!

Sounds like you aren't getting your oats properly hydrated. They should take many months to dry out. Mine colonise verry fast. I haven't used an agar wedge to inoculate in a while but when I did my oats actually colonised faster than WBS. When inoculated with 5cc of LI they colonise in 5 days. From G2G they take 7. Inoculation points are a bit over rated IME. I've never noticed enough of a difference between large and small grains to influence my grain choice.

I think it's more about the volume of mycelium you spawn than the points too. Either way if the grain is "the problem" then the problem is how you do grain. They all work fantastically for someone, they're not broken. Figure out how to work with what you have

I inoculated some WBS from 9 month old syringes a few weeks ago and so far I have two colonizing tubs going.

There was some discussion in one of the other threads on oats that spores don't germinate particularly well on them for some people. Could be that the startchy crap left on WBS aids in the spore germination process as well. I doubt it really matters much.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...
