General idea of what I'm looking at?

Today I have found this fungus growing on rotting logs. I'm in NE America. I am still new at this hunting gig and I'm trying to learn more..

It was raining out today so that (spore print?) I got is just wet no color from what I notice. Maybe a little blackish grey. When I put part of this fungus on the paper after it dried a little from the rain hardly anything was showing up. No signs of blue bruising. Maybe a hint of green in there? My eyes may be deceiving me though.
Would greatly appreciate some advice on this find. I'm excited to go out tomorrow because of the rain we got today

compare to Fomitopsis pinicola maybe

p.s. your only hope at this time of year is probably some straggling gyms, or if you're lucky enough, maybe even the fabled P. quebec-ensis (or whatever its called)

You mean this time of year isn't good for any place where I am? Was hoping to go to some woods and cow fields later today. It is still 50-70*F where I am. Just had rain all day yesterday and it's at 60 right now. Would it be worth it still?

i'd say its still worth it in those ranges, however its probably ground temps too that combine with atmospherics to prompt fruiting in some species. since cincts are def. terrestrial, it would be fun to watch ground temps and see when they pop in the spring. for science, you know.
i'm still looking when i'm out. not holding my breath mind you, or really purposefully looking. but i'm still keeping my eye out.
its an el nino year after a bitchin bad winter last year and a horribly dry summer (locally).
and i'm just an optimist. a cynical optimist, but optimist all the same.
good luck, and you'll still find *somethings* and advance your own knowledge of terrain and local species. and you get exercise! where's the downside?

Very nice
What am I to be looking for when it comes to ground temps? And I believe optimism runs throughout 'us', not too many people can say that.
I'm going out shortly, anything I find I will be posting on here later.
Haven't had any luck since my pluteus bathroomfloorus in my signature lol was a good eat!
