I found a decent sized pile of these heavy, delightful smelling mushrooms under Live Oaks in south GA. working on a print now. Any ideas? I just knew that I would turn them over to see purplish brown gills!

Are there dangerous Tricholoma? These were not at all bitter like mushroomexpert says T. caligatum are.
Are there likely lots of unnamed Tricholoma species?
I want to eat one!

So how dangerous are these as unnamed Tricholoma? Mycorrhizal with Oaks, unstaining flesh... surely theyre just mild T. caligatum? Sorry to bump so much... there are just so many of them and they look so tantalizing!

Taste them, just don't swallow to be safe, def a notsutake. I think your right on with T. caligatum. They are dirty as fuck too clean them shits off before turning upside down and putting them in a "pile".

Thanks. I've tasted one already... not a unique flavor (not unpleasant), but not bitter like T. caligatum can be apparently. Theyre still edible if that's what they are. I've never eaten wild Tricholoma and was hoping for some reassurance!
Yes, theyre dirty. The sand taps right off. I'll take care of them before I eat them.

The taste is mild, if they are T. caligatum.
I know there are no old & bold mushroom hunters, but I'm going for it. I'm going to try one medium sized, mid maturity (veil just broken) fruit. Hope I dont die.

There are a ton of old, bold mushroom hunters!
The most famous one is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_McIlvaine_(mycologist)
He ate hundreds of species with unknown or toxic edibility, and eventually died of old age.
Regarding Tricholoma, some are edible and others are toxic. As long as you cook it you shouldn't be at risk of death. Sounds like a good experiment, start with small amounts & save lots of dried material.
I haven't heard of toxic matsutake lookalikes from the genus Tricholoma, so the odds are that this is edible.

Thanks, man. I immediately spit it out. Bitter as fuck cooked. I'm going to try a parboil first now. I'll update.

I guess it is Tricholoma caligatum. No bitter taste at all until cooked?

Nope. nibbled off quite a few of them with no bitterness. 1 min in a hot pan with butter made them almost unpalletable

So I tried a quick, 2 min boil before frying. still bitter as hell. Then I sliced them then and boiled for 2 min. Still goddamn disgusting. Then I sliced them then and boiled for 10 min. Still gross.
I guess T. caligatum is just a gross fucking mushroom.
Any other suggestions?

Yeah I guess so. Fuck 'em. Let the squirrels enjoy 'em.
I'm not Ol' Ironguts ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_McIlvaine_(mycologist) ), but I feel like I've learned a lesson.
