avoiding contamination
    #22505798 - 11/10/15 04:06 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

i did a g2g transfer of a fully colonized multispore rye jar to 3 corn quarts infront of my flow hood in a small room. i put about a one inch layer of rye berries on top of the corn and slowly rolled around two of the jars. the last one, i did not shake. i instead let the rye colonize the top layer and let it start to grow downward.

my theory was that if some contamination made it into the jar during the transfer process that it would be on the top layer with the rye berries and that the mushroom mycelium would be able to grow over it before the contam had a chance to grow.

this seems safer than mixing the possible contam into the grain jar where it could be placed anywhere in the jar and start growing where the mycelium would not be near it.

is this a possible way to avoid contamination?

Didn't you post this in the other forum too?

I know where you're coming from with the theory here, whether it makes a difference, I've done that before too, but i only leave it for a few days to recover and then give it a shake to get the innoc going. Yours look good so I'd personally shake it now

They always say it's a race against contamination, so fastest wins. Shake and bake
