polyfil question
    #22505237 - 11/10/15 02:02 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I have my polyfil sitting in my closet out of the plastic wrapping. Whats the best way to sterilize this before I stuff my tub.

I don't think you need to. Polyfil is synthetic.

Not necessary but I may try this out.

No need to, polyfill will not affect the sub even if it is harboring contams. As long as your grain spawn is fully colonized and bacteria free before opening, you really shouldn't have to worry about contams at that point. I mean, you're spawning in open air anyway, there's billions of contams floating by and into your sub. Just make sure to pasteurize your subs correctly (if using manure or other supplements), or you'll grow trich. Coir is pretty much contam resistant, so no worries there.

Hmm a question about the polyfill aswell but this regards the lids.
I have posted some stuffs on the board that i soon gonna start my first bulkspawn.

I know have a question regarding the lids.
Shall i go with the "polyfill hole lid" or this http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10628004/fpart/all/vc/1

The last one seems like a better idea?

IMO you'll need self healing lids if you do Wbs, popcorn or rye. As for polyfill or tyvek.. Which ever is easier to get. Theyre for gas exchange. A lot pillows have 100% polyester filling inside if you have an old one lying around but you can also buy tyvek coveralls for like $7.

SHIPs are just another vector for contams IMO, rather just crack the lid open and inoculate.
or are you asking whether you should buy proper SFDs instead of the polyfill?
poly needs to be stuffed TIGHT, SFDs are easier but both work fine.

how tightly are we talking about stuffing the bottom holes because i can compress the polyfil pretty tight, should i barely be able to stuff it in the holes or should it just be a tight fit compared to the top holes

stuff it in real tight first, you need a big fuckin ball of poly to get it tight enough.
wait half a day or so and check the dry rings around the bottom holes, 1/2 - 1" dry rings is perfect IMO.

Very tight.
Rip/cut off a piece of polyfill, roll one end of it and pull it through the hole. It should be very snug and not easy to pull through. Then cut off excess.
using a toothpick or whatever helps push it through the hole.

As for the GE filter on your lids, stuffing a 1/4" hole tightly with polyfill works well. No need to mess around with those terrible smelling silicone glues to try to attach a SFD or tyvek disc to the top of your lids. That's my least favorite part of the entire grow process. I like to keep things simple

I think you're confusing OP for the thread jacker

allstarpnut asks about the bottom holes in monotub, shootox jacked the thread and asks for ge holes in lids.

unless i'm confusing it all. has happened before, will happen again

Iam living in Europe and we cant just go in at the post office to get some tyvek.
My friend works as a carpenter and they use tyvek to cover the windows or something he told me.
So he will take like 2meter to me i hope its the same tyvek i can post a pic when i have it.

Reason i ask is because i gonna go with the WBS.
So i wonder if i gonna drill 1 hole and stuff it tight as fuck or go with the self healing lids i linked.

Sooner when i become comfortable with everything i gonna go for Agar.
And i would prefer to not buy new lids for this.
I cold also go agar first ofc i guess then i dont have to do anything with the lids right?
The lid i use is just a single metall one we dont have the "ring thing" in Europe.
I hope u guys understand what i mean.

And OP i hope you dont mind me "borrowing" your thread just felt stupid to start a new one when my question regards the same thing.

I have read that i shall be as tight as it can be.
If u think its tight u can still get it tighter haha.

And the top holes shall be very lose in the monotub right?
