ThePhd's log
    #22504924 - 11/10/15 12:45 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Inoculated 10cc onto 10 presterilized BRF jars on 11/5 using oven tek (yeah yeah yeah) with needle flame sterilizing after each jar.

Currently incubating at constant 79 degrees with 50% RH exposed to ambient light in a tit, top tupperware closed.

No foil or tape over inoculation holes.

11/10: 2 of 10 jars showing what I hope is myc, smaller than the size of a dime at one or more injection site.

Will update as the project progresses.

For what you used the oven?

The theory is inoculation close to a heat source causes the air around the jars to rise, lifting contams away from the injection.

Many posters feel the heat source actually creates a complex wind pattern and is not effective.

I have seen one test with incense that showed the complex pattern, but it was being held behind the jar, which I think sullies the test.

In any case it probably just did nothing and was equivalent to open air. But hopefully the flame sterilization was enough

A heat source will create air movement yes or yes, specially inside the oven. It will create convection currents. So yeah i'm one of those guys that believe that what you did was risky. Why don't you just build a SAB

Open air is safer than what you did inside the oven.

You need still air to do your work, contams will still be able to fall into one of your jars.

Your best bet is to build a SAB, as mentioned by Mr. Alien

Do what you want man, we are just here to give the best advice, so you don't have to waste time running into contams and having to start over.

is not about RR, is simple physics and common sense. Now let me guess some of your pf tek jars will have success and you will attribute it to the oven. Then noobs will think that what you did actually works. Poor noobs.

I'm not trying to defend what I did, I got bad advice and would use a SAB if this project gets contaminated.

But the dismissal of oven tek, as far as I've seen, is based on a priori reasoning, and not an empirical test.

Again, I would never tell anyone to use it. I'm just curious.

After tossing 3 jars due to almost no colonization (colonized for about 30 days total), i fruited in a tit sgfc to keep temps at 73 (temp in the room is about 64 degrees otherwise). fanning/misting 2-3 times daily. this is what's going on after about 10 days!

I applaud your success but I urge you not to endorse that oven air inoculation!

That's gotta be a typo, tub-in-tub SGFC just don't make no sense.

From what's viable in those pictures and his description of his attemp to overcome low temps..

Pretty sure he's got something out of place here.

Op read a SGFC tek and don't deviate. 64 is fine.
