poopy straw flour?
    #22504245 - 11/10/15 09:45 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Is this a crazy idea/something that has been tried before:

I've noticed that shrooms need grains to germinate, but grow faster on bulk.

I've also outright stolen the hypothesis that there are micronutrients in manure that promote growth of dung-lovers from this guy:

The plan is to use a tek similar to BRF/verm tek except replace the verm with chopped straw, which will hopefully act as both a moisture reservoir, substrate, and something for the BRF to stick to.  The straw will be hydrated by boiling in water containing hpoo to hopefully transfer some of the nutrients from the hpoo to the straw.

11/8/2015:
1-Dry straw (acquired from a farm) was chopped into 1/2" pieces.

2-1/2 cup horse dung (acquired from a farm and previously aired to remove ammonia) was mixed with 4 cups water and the straw and brought to a boil.

3-When boiling started, the heat was reduced to prevent boilover.  The material was simmered for 30 min.

4-the straw/poo/water mixture was dumped into a spaghetti strainer & allowed to drain for 10 min (note= the straw had turned slightly brown, indicating that it could have picked up some of the compounds from the hpoo).

5-the straw was hand-squeezed dry until squeezing would no longer produce brown liquid

6- the straw was lightly dusted with organic BRF.  Excess BRF was removed by putting the straw into a dry spaghetti strainer, covering with a plate and shaking.

7-the straw was placed in a 1 quart jar with a Tyvek lid covered in aluminum foil (it filled the jar about halfway).

8-The jar was PC'd at 12 PSI for 2.5 hr and allowed to cool overnight.

11/9/2015

1- The jar was placed in a glovebox freshly sprayed with Lysol & wiped down with 70% IPA

2-A MS spore syringe was flame sterilized, wiped with alcohol and used to inoculate at 4 points around the edge of the Tyvek.

3-After inoculation, the outer perimeter of the Tyvek lid was layered with rubber cement to cover the holes and seal the edge of the Tyvek lid.

4-It was left to incubate at ~ 70°F
