Pretty much any edible can be done with pf tek, just a variation of it.

For Mono's, it seems reishi really does the best. Oysters would need restricted surface area (they pin like mad and then abort like mad if they aren't coming out of a few small holes), shiitake prefers to be grown out of blocks where the surface are is open on all sides. So Mono's are boss with reishi. That's about it.

Definitely going to try out a Mono next time. My 5 cakes (PF Tek) for my first attempt at growing are fruiting now, regardless of my lack of attention to them... Pretty nice to be close to harvesting my first crop. How exciting.

From my understanding, Monotubs need less attention once they are fruiting. Is this accurate? I am at work at least 9 hours a day, and rarely make it home to fan and spray. Your Monos look lovely, not to mention the fruits in your pictures of your signature. Yowza!

Just cause I'm excited about my first grow, I'll share a photo of one cake. I had some problems with keeping humidity (figured that's why most pins were coming from underneath the cake), then I remade the SGFC and moved it out of the closet and now it seems to be going much better.

^ That's a sweet pin cluster for a pf cake, nice work. I'd be dancing like a djibouti warrior, lol.

My jars are still moving, very slowly. I think my 1/2 pint tall boys are largely responsible for the slow colonization that I've been experiencing.

The mycolony in my 11/25 jar has just met itself on the other side of the jar, so now it wraps all the way around. It's at around 85% completion, just a little bit more to go. My best jar from 1/5 is also wrapped all the way around, and is about halfway down the sides of the jar, so about 50% on that one. If it were a 1/2 pint low boy, it would be in the consolidation phase right now. Both of these jars smell very clean, so I have high hopes for those two.

I also have a jar from 1/5 that looks great but smells like ranch dressing, and it's at about 75% as well. I posted that one earlier in the thread, thinking it might be cobweb, but it's obviously not cobweb, and looks and grows exactly like my other AA+ jars. It has formed a blobby mutant inside the jar, just like that bacterial jar from my last batch. I don't expect to harvest anything good from that one, but I'll probably try to fruit it in vitro just to see if it produces anything. Obviously there's something wrong with it, likely a bacterial presence.

Forgot about sawdust cakes, would be worth trying. Seems like I remember RR saying on one of the videos lions main in a SGFC works but he left the lid off or something? I could be wrong.

Spad, I missed the post about that yield, can't remember. I know the last 27quart I harvested I got 3 oz from 3 quarts of spawn and 1.5 from the second flush, don't expect much from the third.

Erramon, welcome to the Shroomery, Nice cake! Definitely a good move getting it out of the closet. I have grown cakes in a closet but they do much better out in the room. Yeah mono's don't require much attention if you get the poly right. may have to mist once and a while if you are letting it get a little more FAE sometimes or you mixed your bulk a little dry but that's it.

Thanks, and thanks! I'm pretty excited to try a Monotub setup. I'm slowly gathering my necessities. I have actually 8 cakes inoculated about a 1.5 weeks ago, so I guess I'll have to run those through the SGFC before I move onto Monos. I've read a slight bit about 'grating' the cakes into a bulk substrate like CVG or something... Do you have any ideas about that?

Also, should I ask these questions elsewhere? I've only really commented in this thread, so far. Hahah.

So I woke up to broken veils today, so I harvested before I went to work. That one pin cluster was the first to mature, still waiting on the other 4 cakes. Woo hoo! My first fruits! They are small, compared to what I expected, but nonetheless, I'm excited (:

Gotta say, this thread helped inspire me to start cultivating. Very much appreciate it, Gyo

Not yet, got one coming from Amazon, set for delivery tomorrow. A little late, as I've harvested 2 cakes already, but a fan and a cookie cooling rack works so far.

so today I woke up and saw this..

both jars are only one day into the week-long consolidation phase and are already growing mushrooms invitro. is this a bad or good sign? do I just let them continue growing like that while I wait for the 7 days to be over (before I proceed with dunking and rolling and then birthing in my SGFC)? Also, I've got another jar that will be dunked and rolled tomorrow but that hasn't had any invitro pinning whatsoever. is this because MS is so random or could it be because that jar maybe didn't receive enough light or what?

If you see in vitro pins it's ready

alright. those two jars are dunking right now and tomorrow I will dunk the jar that's been consolidating for 6 days now (no pins on it) and drill the holes in my tote and put the perlite in the oven for 30 mins. so by monday there'll be 3 cakes out of 11 sitting in the FC. I'll dunk about another 3-4 by friday, so things are coming together nicely right now.
is it absolutely necessary to drill holes in my FC if I just do the upside down tote idea I mentioned some time ago, considering I'll only have like 3 cakes in there at once?

What upside down tote idea? I can't remember :jah:
Definitely go ahead and construct a proper SGFC.  A lot of folks roll in verm straight out of the bag but if you want to put it in the oven first that's fine too.

I was bored/ high the other day and wrote this
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=22820332&page=0&vc=1#22820332 May help if there is anything you were wondering about during fruiting.

no no, not the verm.. I meant the perlite. I'd bake the perlite, because mine is SupaGro and I read that it's not the best and I'd have to put it in the oven first before using it

Oh sorry dude my bad, I've never heard of putting perlite in the oven so I thought you meant verm. I used the shitty miricle grow with nutes added (all I could find) and just rinsed it really good, worked great. It's pretty much just small glass rocks with a lot of surface area.
