Probably not cobweb. Cobweb is unheard of before a first flush. That is not healthy tho, could be a pin mold, could be some thing else. It's no Bueno tho.

Ah shit, well thanks for the heads up Pasty. Guess I'll need to get started on some more jars then.

I wish I had a print from a more traditional cube strain to work with for my first time, I don't want to use up my only AA+ print on failed attempts. I also have prints for P. allenii, P. mexicana, and P. cyanescens, but I'm saving all of those for when I'm more experienced. Thankfully, a single print has enough spores for hundreds of syringes, so if I'm careful I shouldn't run out of AA+ spores anytime soon.

Back to the drawing board I guess, maybe I'll get some real living cubensis within this decade, lol.

Start working with agar and culture if you want to save on spores and increase your success rate. Since your just starting that may feel overwhelming to you but it's really where you will probably end up eventually. A print can inoculate 1000's of agar plates and a single plate can be expanded to do 10000's of tubs. Grow forever from one spore print and have few contams. Keep it in mind

Cultivating exotic species is not much more difficult.
Perhaps more attention to detail, especially in terms of casing, light, and air exchange.
But, the process is relatively the same as with cubes.
Give it a try, you won't be disappointed! :yoda:

P allenii and p cyan will need to go outside to see good yields, especially the cyans. They need a cold shock. They might also take over a year to fruit.

Agar is definitely where I want to be, soon, but I need some steady work first. Those jars were more of a trial run to practice the methods in my spare time, and I have one jar from that batch that is STILL colonizing, thirty days later. Smells clean, looks clean; I've heard of BRF jars taking up to two months to hit 100%, so I still have hope for that one. If it makes it to 100% I'll put it in an SGFC and maybe get something interesting from it.

That micro tub, on the other hand, was a jar that went bacterial, so it's not too big of a loss. It was starting to knot and formed a blobby pin in the jar, so I made a tiny coir/verm tub to see if it would take off again despite the bacteria. The container was like $1, and I only needed a laughably pathetic portion of the coir brick to prepare it, so I have plenty of supplies left over. Round two should be a lot better.

Regarding the exotics, from what I understand the woodlovers are a bit more difficult than cubes, but the mycelia are a lot 'hardier' when they really get going. I might try the P. mexicana though, since they can form sclerotia I would imagine them to be a very forgiving species. How do you think A. Hoffman would have grown his specimens back in the late fifties? He was probably using agar as well, lol.

UPDATE: You were spot on Pasty, that tub was contaminated with Trichoderma or something similar. I took it outside and set it in a shed for a few hours, when I went back to clean it out there was a tiny spot of green spores forming on the edge of one of the white clusters. Thanks to your advice, I was able to get it out of the house before it sporulated, so thanks a million man.

I made 6 pseudoaztecorum bottles using oats, straw, wheat bran and coffee. They have been colonised for a while but I decided to let them consolidate for a few weeks befor fruiting.

Grow them basically like cubs except. They seem to need a casing later. They produce mutants unless fruited at low temperatures (lower than 60F). They colonise at a decent rate but fruit slower than anything I've ever seen. My first pins didn't form until 3 months after I put my sub into fruiting conditions. It took so long I had to case it twice. At first they tend to put out only a couple fruits that grow verry slowly. They put out more fruits with each subsequent flush. The later fruits seem to look more normal as well. I'm thinking a long period of consolidation will do them good but that's just a hunch. Not that much is really known about them for sure.

They will grow at higher temps but they get real funky looking. They do seem to grow faster at higher temps though.

Gearing up for round two with the AA+, will update in a few days. That tub contaminated with trich so I ditched it. I guess that jar wasn't as strong as it looked.

On a side note, I found a tasty-looking cluster of gilled mushrooms growing on a tree, in freezing winter temperatures mind you, while hiking the other day. I'm pretty sure that it was an Armillaria of some type, but without any sign of parasitic rot on the tree itself.

I took a piece of the mycelium home with me (in my backpack, lol) and transferred it to some layers of wet cardboard in a ziplock bag. Punched a bunch of holes in the bag with a needle, set it in a tupperware container, and came back a few days later to check up on it; the layers of cardboard are practically fused together now with white, dendritic threads of mycelium. Not really sure what I'll do with it once it finishes colonizing the cardboard, but for now it's keeping me amused while I work on my next batch of jars.

I still need to go over to Mush ID and get a confirmed ID, but it looked similar to an Armillaria cluster, and had some obvious white spore deposits on the fruiting bodies. It's very tough though, almost like a polypore.

What's up people, been a while. I got about 7 quarts and 2 pint masters of the AA+ ready for a shake, about to transfer some more to new agar and cornmeal mush plates. Got my blender assembly ready and excited to get started on some liquids.

The parts came in today to convert the 925 to a sterilizer, excited to get that going and start narrowing down the spawn problem I am having.  The 66 quart PE tub and a 27 quart mini are getting a decent pinset, but the 66 quart is already showing a contam on the side. It is in a different resident that I do my sterile work so I'm just gonna salt the fuck out of it to get the first flush. Hope everyone is having a great day.
