Merry Christmas mush cult. No shrooms in these -- just a lot of weed -- but I'm making some shroom and weed chocolates as soon as these APE tubs flush.

Sorry I haven't posted lately... just been crazy bust with work and family. Still lurking!

Completed first transfer of MS AA+ and CRS last night. I only had 12 plates left from the last pour and plenty of nice growth to work with, so I threw the extra plates in the fridge until I get pouring more plates.

HOLY SHIT, my GT clone is performing well. Pin set it epic. I have had good performing bins but never a full canopy (3/4 at best). I think this cloned GT, might just do it. I am a little bummed that I don't remember if the GT cultures I have currently have in my fridge are from the same culture as this monotub. It's possible I gave this culture out to someone in a trade :frown:

What to do? If this tub performs well, do I just take prints and start over since this comes from a clone already and shouldn't be cloned?

I have a weirdo Malabar tub that came from a clone as well. It is pushing out what appear to be blobs. It also half colonized my top layer CVG, but doesn't smell, have metabolites, or show any other signs of contamination.

Something magical is happening in my Mazatapec tubs. I have two, both from MS. Super fast colonizer, super aggressive mycelium. No signs of contamination at this point. First pins just now popping up.

My PE to Oats look good- nearly colonized. My Argentina clone to oats mixed jars- 50% are nearly completely colonized. 50% are very slow. I tiger dropped them and am thinking I may have introduced contaminants in the process. ATL7 jars looking good too. Lots in the works.

No problem, holiday festivities and whatnot. I haven't done agar work in far too long . That GT tub looks beautiful and I think that Malabar tub will sort itself out

Nice fudge/brownies there NumeroUno. Lately I've been making capsules with mj-infused coconut oil, and they work GREAT. They give me dankly skunky burps though, lol, so I have to be careful.

My bulk tub is coming right along. It looks like my coir might be a bit drier than it should be, should I be worried? I'm worried that it may end up like this one: Premature Fruiting

Since this is my first grow, I wouldn't be too disappointed in a tub like that, but I'd really like my tub to be all that it can be, like an army of one. Is there any way to increase the moisture in the sub without possibly contaminating the tub or killing the mycel? I can't think of any way to do that. Steam? Too hot. Spray a little distilled water in? Instant contamination, I would think. So am I basically fucked if I didn't get the moisture just right from the start?

I read that mycel often like a drier substrate when colonizing anyway, so maybe I'm worrying for nothing. I read a post from Pasty (I think?) over at the Mycotopia, where he said that people often put too much moisture in their bulk subs. That poster preferred the sub to feel damp, but not so wet that squeezing it will cause drops of moisture to fall out. That's a little drier than what most people would consider "field capacity", and he said that he gets quicker colonization and less mold contamination when using a slightly drier sub. Pasty, if you're around feel free to correct me if that wasn't your post, I'd hate to misquote you.

Can I see your tubs again?

I like my sub to drip a little but a lot less then what people call field capacity. There are two good reasons to try to undershoot field capacity a little bit:

A) Faster colonization will occur. Mycelium rips through the drier medium much quicker. Probably a result of searching for sustenance.

B) Less extra moisture for mold to latch on to. An overprepped tub will bleed moisture and contams will thrive along with your mycelium. Our goal is to hit that sweet spot where mycelium expands and continues its processes in as-close-to-optimum as possible while preventing a breeding ground for contam.

A lot of mushroom growing is nuances done by the grower that lead to big impressions on the cultures. You gotta bend and curve with the culture man, that's the only way you get her to flush that canopy you want. So overall drier is better then wet to an extent.

Afterall, I can always add more water. Have you tried squeezing water out of a bucket of coir handful by handful? Shit is real tiring real quick :lmafo:

Alright here's some pics. You can see some condensation on the lid, but not on the sides, unless it's just hard to see on the clear plastic.

From above:

The lid:

Inside:

One of the sides:

The bottom:

It was spawned and shelved last Friday, so it has had around 4 full days of colonizing time. Looking a bit dry to me, but the white is spreading at a nice predictable rate so maybe I'm just worrying too much. I fucked up the spawn ratio too and got more of a 1:2 instead of 1:1.5 or 1:1.

Uhh... So Is that coir/verm?

If so yeah, it needs a misting. Also tape up all of those holes. You did an interesting sgfc/mono hybrid there , was that grain in there?

While colonizing you don't want fresh air.

So Gyo, what is your recipe for a perfect bucket of CVG?  I always seem to overshoot and end up a tad wet.

Very complicated answer.

I use about 2-3 handfuls of gypsum, 1 block of coir and 2.5-3qts of verm.

If I use 2 handfuls of my pellet gypsum (needs to absorb water to expand so I have to add this to my water content) and 2.5 qts of verm I usually use 4.5-5 qts of water. If I use 3 handfuls of gyp or just dump it in and 3 qts of verm then its 5-5.5 qts of water.

My numbers are completely different from damions but I also use more additives and whatnot. i just need that extra Q for the gypsum.

I usually prep with 4.5 qts no matter what and then mix and let cool as per usual tek. Then when I go back and squeeze I add a .5 qt at a time (Or 1 qt if it's really dry).

Before I work on anything I get in there with a knife and stab up the brick to create holes and when I pour my boiling water I pour directly on the block, up and donw. I lay it on its side and stab the knife straight in parallel to the block (Blocks of coco are just husks melded together in layers. Break through the layer) and twist the knife until it makes a dent. Helps to work from the outside in.

By the time I pour water on it it's pretty open. If it hasn't broken up completely from that 4.5 qts I know I need to add more most of the time.

But it's all very situation and depends on your additives but it's basically a bucket tek.

It's straight coir/verm, I scaled down the recipe from the bucket tek here, with the idea of hopefully saving a bacterial PF tek jar (BRF). I posted a pic of the jar earlier in this thread, it was looking mighty wet but had pushed out a blobby little pin on the side, and it still smelled very clean.

I figured that I could try a "micro" tub design and if it contaminated I could just pitch the whole container. I shopped around for the smallest tub design I could find and settled on something like this, but I forgot about the liner. Hopefully that's no big deal, I had heard that some people don't even use them. :frown:

In that thread he keeps his tubs wrapped with a plastic bag during colonization, and then pulls them out to introduce FAE and starts misting them to trigger fruiting.

Should I ditch the bag and tape those holes up instead? Also, will it be safe to mist the tub while it's still colonizing? Won't that put me at risk for contamination?

Tape up the holes and yeah, it's safe to mist the monotub. It's just a bit dry on that surface there.

The plastic bag is better then open-air but I'd personally tape those up.

Let it finish with the holes taped up and whne it's all white you can let it breath. What you're doing, and what you did with the plastic bag, is trap CO2 but more importantly restrict fresh air from reaching the mycelium. Remember, during colonization you want the least amount of fresh air coming in (To an extent. All lids are made improper from factories. The imperfection of the lid allows for some fresh air that promotes gas exchange and prevents the air from getting too stale).

So keep that in mind and continue colonizing it. the rules change a bit when you fruit :super:

merry christmas guys! :awesome:
oh and quick question. it's been about 6 days since I inoculated but I don't really see any mycelium on my jars yet (don't worry I didn't move them around I just glanced). how long does it usually take you guys to see noticeably spots of mycelium emerging? since the temp is at 60-65 degrees here, how much extra time should I expect to wait before seeing anything?
