I went with Doc_T's mini mono tub design, aka the "shotgun-mono hybrid" tub. The hardest part was scaling down the bulk sub recipe for a single 1/2 pint cake, lol, but I think I got the proportions about right.

I have a quick question though, maybe one of you guys can help me out? What's the point in covering my tub with a black bag during the colonization period? It seems unusual, when I was doing my BRF jars I was told not to worry about ambient light during colonization, and that the gas exchange from the jars should be unrestricted. Is the black bag more of a moisture barrier in this case, to keep my tub from drying out? Should I have wrapped the tub tightly so that no air can enter or escape? That didn't seem right to me, so I only covered the tub loosely, keeping the end of the bag loose so that the gases can enter and leave freely.

This remains to be an item of contention for some shroom growers. Some feel colonization performs best in the dark because light is one of the pinning triggers. But most feel that is old info. The other reason to seal the container for colonization is to increase CO2; which is thought to improve consolidation.

Some people love proving this stuff wrong, one of whom would be Azur:

Edit: Inocuole is right. I was just trying to be nice in case some dummy still disagreed.

Nobody that I know of feels colonization performs best in the dark anymore.  If there's a point of contention, it's between the past and present.

Your tubs look great. What kind of stuff do you put in your substrate besides hpoo? I'm about to get in the kitchen right now and spawn some stuff to a hpoo substrate with 3 cups poo, 3 cups verm, and 3 cups coir with some gypsum.

too late lol I already inoculated without a SAB. the plastic seems to have been too thick to make any holes in so I just wiped it down well with alcohol, sprayed it with water, and put it on its side. I also cleaned the table and gloves and took a brief shower right beforehand. I throughly flame-sterilized the needle between jars and worked as quickly as I could without moving the jars around too much. I then cleaned the spot on my closet shelf with alcohol as well and sat the jars there carefully

two things: I noticed several of the jars were kinda damp on the spots where the tape is covering the inoculation holes. I'm thinking it's either condensation or the water from the pot boiled too hard and bipassed the aluminum cover. should I be concerned?
and the other thing.. I forgot to mark the holes on the one with the tyvek on the lid so I ended up having to do an open-lid inoculation with it since having to take the gloves off to feel the holes and mark them while I was in the middle of inoculating my jars would've been way too much of a hassle. would the fact I had to open the lid for about 5-10 seconds be enough to introduce contams? I also accidentally pushed down too hard on the syringe on that jar and ended up injecting a whole cc in just one spot. it would still colonize well, right?

You may be fine, the dry verm is a good filter. I will admit as Tagyo did, my first cake grow I didn't use a SAB and all the cakes did great, like he said for PF tek you can get by with a little luck, but it is good practice to use one, even with cakes. I know my first inoculation was awkward as hell :lmafo: I thought I screwed everything up. Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Well I must confess I thought the same thing nearly a year ago now. But I had also purchased pre-sterilized cakes in the mail  :facepalm3: So there was that too. I had about a 50% success rate despite that n00b decision (the verm barrier is disturbed in shipping; and the cakes came in on their sides!)

I've made so many errors, but I feel like my first pf cake trial was the most amass in poor decisions. Hence my warning, brother. Good vibes, I'm sure you'll get something :mushroom2:

*sigh* like it was yesterday.

Water getting past the foil happens and it should be fine so long as you let them cool and dry overnight at least, 24 hours or more for security.

Opening the lid for 5-10 seconds in a non sterile (SAB, flow hood) environment is very dangerous and only time will tell.

Shooting 1cc to one side will be fine but a slower colonizer, could have messed with the water content slightly but we'll see.

You should be good homie, note your mis-steps and improve :super:

I only use coir/verm,

I don't have a source for hpoo and cvg is working fine for me.

I think light helps colonizing tubs develop. If not the light energy then the slight temperature increase from trapped radiant energy helps it develop. I keep my house around 70 and I live in the mountains so my heat is constantly running.

I had a tub over a vent and where the rest of my tubes just finished colonizing this one has knots all over and about five pins popping. All my tubs are colonized with indirect sunlight.

I'm doing pretty good Gyo. Busy as always, but no worse for wear. How YOU doing?

I have already forgotten where I got what or from who, lol. 4 months ago I was worried I was going to have a hard time getting spores and now, I'm looking at syringes and cultures counting days hoping I can get to them before they expire.

ND you have a whole Army there!

I have so many cultures I would lose all of them if they expired :lmafo:,

Put em in a Ziploc in the fridge with the rest of your food in the back. I revive prints from four or five years ago this way. Syringes are finicky as shit and I dislike them for long term storage. That's when I drop to agar and save the plate.

I'm sure you know though

@inoc, limited MS poly and cased at spawning, I took a clone from a nice cluster yesterday
